It‘s unclear what the federal agents were doing in Chinatown.
HSI vehicles and unmarked cars were seen parked at the location. The crowd was preventing some of the vehicles from entering the parking lot.
The operation was one of at least three immigration sweeps conducted in Los Angeles on Friday. In the other one, federal agents converged at a Home Depot where day laborers regularly gather in search of work.
The raid at the clothing wholesaler began about 9:15 a.m. in the Fashion District, less than two miles from Los Angeles City Hall.
It was an extraordinary show of force.
Anti-immigration crackdown protests outside a federal detention centre turned violent in Los Angeles as protesters clashed with police. The clashes followed 44 arrests made by federal immigration authorities. The police used pepper spray and flash bangs to disperse the demonstrators.
The FBI provided the following statements on the law enforcement activity:
„As we have been asked to do, we are sending Agents to participate in these immigration enforcement efforts. That includes assisting in cities where major operations are already underway and where we have special agents embedded on operational teams with DHS. Our help may vary depending on what DHS needs, such as SWAT operators, who can support high risk arrest operations, and other resources such as intelligence analysts and technical support working from command posts.“

The use of so-called less-lethal munitions was authorized at 8 p.m. following reports of a small group of “violent individuals” throwing large pieces of concrete at officers, police said. A citywide tactical alert was issued shortly thereafter.
Chaos erupted earlier in the day in the heart of the Fashion District after federal immigration authorities detained employees inside a clothing wholesaler, and used flash-bang grenades and pepper spray on a crowd protesting the raid around 1:30 p.m.

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic, citing a source at Nasser Medical Complex, report that the death toll from Israeli gunfire at the aid distribution site in Rafah has risen to eight.
In total, at least 118 Palestinians have been killed near the US-backed aid points since May 27, according to figures form the Gaza Government Media Office.
Haaretz also reported that Lieberman directly linked the group to IS, saying: „The Hamasha clan are in essence lawless criminals who in recent years wanted to give themselves an ideological angle or spin, so they became Salafi [jihadists] and began identifying with ISIS.“
Though the group now brands itself as an „anti-terror“ force, locals see little distinction between their behaviour and that of organised crime syndicates. Al-Araby Al-Jadeed also reported that the group rebranded from the Anti-Terrorism Unit to The Popular Forces in May 2025 – possibly to obscure its affiliations.

However, The Guardian has reported that French officials briefed their Israeli counterparts this week that the conference would not be the moment for recognition.

If France and the UK were to carry out this recognition, they would become the first G7 nations to take this step, causing a „political earthquake“ according to observers, given their historical ties with Israel. The Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer threatened last week to annex parts of the West Bank if this recognition took place, according to a report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
