Netanyahu is set to travel to Germany on Wednesday afternoon as protesters against his government’s judicial reform threaten to block the road to the Ben Gurion Airport to disrupt his trip. According to the previous itinerary issued by his office, Netanyahu was supposed to return on Friday but the new release it would happen on Thursday.
A convoy of Israeli army veterans and former hostages who were involved in the 1976 Entebbe Operation in Uganda arrived on Wednesday to protest at Ben-Gurion Airport ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s departure to Germany for a state visit.
The convoy is part of the protest movement aimed at disrupting Netanyahu’s departure over his constitutional coup.
Organizers said they would further ramp up their response if the government doesn’t shelve the fascist legislation, with a planned “day of escalating resistance” declared for next Thursday. This past Thursday saw protesters stage an unprecedented day of protests and disruption, blocking central Israel’s key Ayalon Highway for some two hours and gumming up roads to Ben Gurion Airport alongside rallies, strikes, blockages and other disruptive activities throughout the country.
Recent moves by the Israeli government to undermine the power of the courts could undermine investment and spark an exodus of educated Israelis, Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron warned on Wednesday. He further declared that it was “imperative” to maintain the independence of the judiciary.
The CEO of Riskified, an Israeli fraud-prevention company, said in a staff email that the judicial overhaul could lead to an economic downturn and put Israel on the path to authoritarianism.
– The MQ-9 was conducting an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission when it encountered Russian aircraft in the Black Sea region, Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said at a briefing Tuesday. The Kremlin’s forces were not able to recover the MQ-9 — a drone with a wingspan of 66 feet — after the crash, Ryder said.
– Moscow blamed the incident on the U.S. drone’s “provocative” flight path, and denied that its jets made physical contact with the unmanned aerial vehicle. The drone “was moving deliberately and provocatively toward the Russian territory with its transponders turned off,” said Antonov.
