The leader of Italy’s anti-establishment 5-Star Movement on Wednesday appealed to the far-right League to drop its insistence that euroskeptic economist Paolo Savona should be economy minister in a government of the two parties.

M5S want to move Savona, League doesn’t

League leader Matteo Salvini, however, said he hoped to form a government with the M5S but rejected the M5S’s idea of moving Savona. He said he wanted „the same team“ and that Di Maio had agreed that Savona was the best man for the job of representing the government’s economic position in Brussels.

Italy poll shows support for right-wing League up, 5-Star steady

Another poll on Monday showed the League jumping 10 points to 27.5 percent and the 5-Star falling about three points to 29.5 percent. In both cases, the two would have a majority in parliament if they decided to join forces as they did after the March vote.

Italian parties pledge backing for NATO amid Syrian uncertainties

(12.4.2018) “I reaffirm … that our intention is to remain close to our allies,” 5-Star leader Luigi Di Maio told reporters, adding: “It is also clear that the end of the fighting in Syria will not be brought about by a military victory but by diplomacy.”

Salvini said Italy had an obligation to remain “loyal” to NATO, but reiterated: “We are firmly opposed to any unilateral actions” in Syria.
