What are the CRG, ERG and NRG? The difference between backbench Tory groups putting pressure on Boris Johnson

The NRG was launched by Tory MPs representing constituencies in Wales, northern regions and the Scottish borders – largely the parts of the country the current Government had promised to support when it was elected.

It has been calling for the Government to set out a specific northern economic recovery plan to help these regions in the wake of economically-damaging lockdowns.

Mr Lammy really went off piste today, didn‘t he

(14.4.2019)

The madness of David Lammy: The Labour MP’s hatred for Brexit is not normal on any level.

Not only did he double down on his foul Holocaust relativism by continuing to compare the present political situation with the most criminal political regime in human history – he pushed it even further by saying his comparison of the ERG to the Nazis was ‘not strong enough’.

Not strong enough. Think about what is being said here.

Brexit news – LIVE: Tory MP says Theresa May ‚in a bunker‘ amid anger over extension, as EU castigates Rees-Mogg after tweet

Brexiteer Mark Francois and ERG member says on the BBC that Theresa May‘s letter to Brussels is a „mistake“ and says the UK should leave the European Union, without a deal.

„She [Ms May] has completely ignored her own cabinet which is unconstitutional and she‘s gone and done it anyway. Her deal will never pass the House of Commons, it‘s been voted down three times – the speaker may not even allow it to come back.

„I‘m afraid the PM is in a sort of bunker here and is not listening to her own MPs, her own party members, or indeed her own cabinet and that is dangerous for the future of the country.“

If a long extension leaves us stuck in the EU we should be as difficult as possible. We could veto any increase in the budget, obstruct the putative EU army and block Mr Macron’s integrationist schemes.

318 Conservative MPs were elected on a manifesto which unequivocally stated: „No deal is better than a bad deal“. Today, a Conservative Prime Minister and Chancellor plan to renege on that pledge and vote against a clean break from Brussels. Do so and British democracy is dead!

Brexit amendments: What will MPs vote on?

Malthouse Compromise

This amendment (f) sets out the process for a „managed no-deal“. It requests:

The government publish tariff schedules
An extension of leaving to 22 May 2019
‚Mutual standstill agreements‘ between the UK and EU until the end of 2021, including payments to the EU
A unilateral guarantee of citizens‘ rights

Another Tory who quit over the deal is now backing it. That makes 22 by my count. PM has an hour to win over another 90 or so.

Brexit ‘Star Chamber’ Advises MPs Against Voting For the Deal

The ‘Star Chamber’ of Brexit lawyers have delivered their own verdict on Theresa May’s revised deal following Geoffrey Cox’s fatal advice earlier, concluding that it does not meet the tests the Government set itself.

Geoffrey Cox‘s new legal advice on the backstop is VERY bad news for the PM. He says „the legal risk remains unchanged“ that there is no way the UK can unilaterally exit the backstop. Almost no way DUP or ERG can back the deal now.

All Eyes on DUP Now: May pulls a unilateral declaration out of the hat

May’s statement is here, the EU’s here – review them yourself. We await Cox’s legal review and the decision of the DUP critics tomorrow. If the DUP give it the thumbs up most Tory rebels will follow suit. The ERG’s lawyers are unlikely to be enthusiastic – that is already priced in. Guido suspects those Tory MPs that want to avoid the hell that will follow a delay to Brexit – for whatever reason – will choose to believe the rabbit is real.

Why the Government‘s latest plan to ditch the backstop won‘t take off

The whole reason for the backstop being in the Withdrawal Agreement that sets out the terms of the UK‘s divorce from the EU is that the Republic‘s border with Northern Ireland would, after Brexit, be the external border of the EU‘s single market – and therefore has to be governed by a treaty between the UK and EU, and not one between the UK and the ROI.

An official from an EU capital also questioned whether the Republic could possibly accept „a bilateralisation that would deprive it of the clout of the EU“.

21.01.2019 - 05:57 [ Telegraph.co.uk ]

Amending the Good Friday Agreement will never fix backstop issue

The plan, it is reported, is to “amend” the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in order make a new joint Anglo-Irish commitment that there will be no return to a hard border in Ireland and no infrastructure on that border in any eventuality.

It is argued that this, coupled with some new EU concessions time-limiting the backstop, will be enough get a decent slice of the 118 Tory and 10 DUP on board.

IT‘S WAR: Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg move to bring down Theresa May over Brexit

(28.9.2018) Boris quit the cabinet back in July in protest at the Chequers plan, and has been a thorn in the side of the PM ever since – despite battles in his personal life.

And Rees-Mogg has been steadily growing in popularity as he represents the hard Brexiteer wing of the Tories – chairing the powerful Eurosceptic faction The European Research Group.

Brexit HQ? Rees-Mogg moves into HUGE mansion as he edges closer to Downing Street

(24.8.2018) Mr Rees-Mogg will use the residence to plot his latest Commons revolt as he sets out his own vision for a bright future outside of the European Union.

A faction of Brexiteer rebels, spearheaded by the eccentric MP, is working to create an “alternative view” to the Government’s Chequers plan, which was rubbished both by Westminster and the EU.
