DUP Statement

(27.3.2019)

However, given the fact that the necessary changes we
seek to the backstop have not been secured between the Government and the European Union, and the remaining and ongoing strategic risk that Northern Ireland would be trapped in backstop arrangements at the end of the implementation period, we will not be supporting the Government if they table a fresh meaningful vote.

The backstop if operational has the potential to create an internal trade border within the United Kingdom and would cut us off from our main internal market, being Great Britain.

What would be a good night for the Conservatives in the 2019 local elections?

But the most significant set of local elections are ones the Conservative Party won’t meaningfully contest, and were last fought not in 2015, but 2014: local council elections in Northern Ireland. All 11 local councils are up for re-election, and in an ideal world for the Tory party, these elections would confirm that the Democratic Unionist Party very strong performance in 2017 was not a passing phase but that the party is actually getting stronger.

Why the Government’s latest plan to ditch the backstop won’t take off

The whole reason for the backstop being in the Withdrawal Agreement that sets out the terms of the UK’s divorce from the EU is that the Republic’s border with Northern Ireland would, after Brexit, be the external border of the EU’s single market – and therefore has to be governed by a treaty between the UK and EU, and not one between the UK and the ROI.

An official from an EU capital also questioned whether the Republic could possibly accept „a bilateralisation that would deprive it of the clout of the EU“.

The plan, it is reported, is to “amend” the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in order make a new joint Anglo-Irish commitment that there will be no return to a hard border in Ireland and no infrastructure on that border in any eventuality.

It is argued that this, coupled with some new EU concessions time-limiting the backstop, will be enough get a decent slice of the 118 Tory and 10 DUP on board.

If Brexit is blocked, will it ever be worth voting again?

Having watched the last two-and-a-half years from the sidelines, depressed by almost the entire political debate in the UK, I could think of no argument that would be new to her. The Withdrawal Agreement’s Northern Ireland Protocol is neither a “backstop” nor temporary

Most of its provisions do not come into force until the end of the transition period. However, at that point and in the absence of an agreement between the UK and the EU to the contrary, the whole Protocol will come into force and will require the whole of the UK to stay in a Customs Union with the EU – a Customs Union in which the UK has no vote on the tariffs to be charged, or on with whom to do or not do trade deals, but will be obliged to follow the EU’s tariffs at all times. Further, it obliges the UK not to deviate from EU rules on a wide range of so-called “level playing field” areas of policy, including environment, workplace rights, state aids and competition law.

It’s beginning to look a lot like a Brexit conspiracy

Quick recap. “As we leave the European Union, we will no longer be members of the single market or customs union.” Yet, weirdly, Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator, claimed yesterday that it was the Prime Minister, during the Brext negotiations, who was the one to set out the request for a deal based on a customs union. So, who exactly is the traitor?

May’s Brexit Deal Has a Fatal Defect: The agreement makes Britain a perpetual subordinate.

This deal, despite its resemblance to the Chequers plan, fundamentally subverts that earlier approach. This is no longer a flawed but defensible compromise. It’s a capitulation.

Some 56 Eurosceptic MPs have now signed up to the ‚Stand up for Brexit‘ campaign which commits them to voting down any deal based on Mrs May’s Chequers proposals.

Worryingly for Mrs May, high-profile Tory Remainers are also promising them to vote against, with the latest names including Culture Committee chair Damian Collins.

Brexit Unionists try to ramp up pressure on May over Brexit deal – forcing vote climbdown in Commons

The Government climbdown and unwillingness to force votes came after the DUP voted with Labour once and abstained five times during Finance Bill votes on Monday. Yesterday, Mr Dodds had made clear the DUP was ready to continue voting against the Government and called on Mrs May to dump her exit plan.

Absolutely staggering. The Government has just accepted all Labour amendments to the Finance Bill because they couldn’t rely upon DUP to support them. Tories in office not in power. A government falling apart in front of us.

DUP versagt May bei Abstimmungen Gefolgschaft

Support for the Union comes from all corners of the UK: Campbell

Indeed, the comments by the Scottish Conservative Leader last weekend highlighted the strength of support across the United Kingdom for maintaining the Union.

Ruth Davidson’s position is not borne out of enthusiastic support for leaving the European Union; she was an advocate for Remain. However, Ruth Davidson recognises the impact of placing an international style border down the Irish Sea. She understands that such an outcome would be seized upon by separatists within the United Kingdom.

The DUP wants to see a sensible deal which maintains the constitutional and economic integrity of the United Kingdom. We will stand up for Northern Ireland but most important is the Union between us all. It is very clear that those same objectives are shared by many others across the United Kingdom. Both those who were ‘Leave’ as well as those who were ‘Remain’recognise that the four countries are stronger together.”

Unionists plan ‘guerilla war’ against Northern Ireland Brexit plan

(12.10.2018) Even if May can get a version of the so-called Irish backstop through the U.K. parliament without DUP votes, the party could use its position as the leading unionist political force in Northern Ireland to try to prevent it from ever being implemented — and in the process block power sharing with nationalist politicians permanently.

“We are going to squeeze their balls until their ears bleed,” the party official said.

EU plan to annex Northern Ireland may spark war

(8.10.2017) At the outset of Brexit, all sides openly agreed there should be no border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, but it now seems the Europeans were being sneaky when they made the pledge. It has now emerged they are keen to see a border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, despite them being the same country.

Given most people are confused by the geography of the UK it is worth quickly recapping before I go any further.
