DUP Statement

(27.3.2019)

However, given the fact that the necessary changes we
seek to the backstop have not been secured between the Government and the European Union, and the remaining and ongoing strategic risk that Northern Ireland would be trapped in backstop arrangements at the end of the implementation period, we will not be supporting the Government if they table a fresh meaningful vote.

The backstop if operational has the potential to create an internal trade border within the United Kingdom and would cut us off from our main internal market, being Great Britain.

What would be a good night for the Conservatives in the 2019 local elections?

But the most significant set of local elections are ones the Conservative Party won’t meaningfully contest, and were last fought not in 2015, but 2014: local council elections in Northern Ireland. All 11 local councils are up for re-election, and in an ideal world for the Tory party, these elections would confirm that the Democratic Unionist Party very strong performance in 2017 was not a passing phase but that the party is actually getting stronger.

Extending Article 50 better option than May‘s Brexit Withdrawal Agreement – DUP

A LONG extension to Article 50 is a better option than the UK Prime Minister‘s draft Withdrawal Agreement, the DUP said.

That would keep the UK in the EU for longer.

The party‘s Brexit spokesman Sammy Wilson said if a deal went through, Britain would have lost its right to leave the EU.

Why the Government‘s latest plan to ditch the backstop won‘t take off

The whole reason for the backstop being in the Withdrawal Agreement that sets out the terms of the UK‘s divorce from the EU is that the Republic‘s border with Northern Ireland would, after Brexit, be the external border of the EU‘s single market – and therefore has to be governed by a treaty between the UK and EU, and not one between the UK and the ROI.

An official from an EU capital also questioned whether the Republic could possibly accept „a bilateralisation that would deprive it of the clout of the EU“.

Amending the Good Friday Agreement will never fix backstop issue

The plan, it is reported, is to “amend” the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in order make a new joint Anglo-Irish commitment that there will be no return to a hard border in Ireland and no infrastructure on that border in any eventuality.

It is argued that this, coupled with some new EU concessions time-limiting the backstop, will be enough get a decent slice of the 118 Tory and 10 DUP on board.

Jeremy Corbyn gives strongest signal yet that Remain would be on ballot paper in second referendum

When questioned by Political Editor Robert Peston on the topic of a second Brexit vote, Mr Corbyn gave his clearest indication yet that Remain would be an option, by saying another referendum would have to be „qualitatively different to the one held before“ and that there would „have to be an option there of what‘s on offer“ in terms of a Brexit deal, suggesting the choice would be between that and Remain.

Mr Corbyn continued that a second vote could be held while still respecting the outcome of the June 2016 referendum.

Brexit vote: The ultimate guide

What are the amendments?

The Labour Party amendment is designed to make sure Britain cannot leave the EU without an exit agreement.

This means Mrs May‘s threat that it‘s her deal or no deal would not sit with the Commons, and Britain would have to stay in the European Union until a new agreement is reached and passed.

A cross-party group has tabled a similar amendment, which blocks Mrs May‘s deal and rules out a no-deal Brexit.

They are all in contempt of the people

From May to the Corbynite Momentum lobby, what all the Remainers want is to narrow things down to that false choice between the government’s Remain-by-another-name and outright remaining in the EU. I do not want to be explaining to my constituents why Brexit is still not over and we are still obeying EU rules in the early 2020s or beyond.
