Israel bombs Gaza after claiming attack on troops denied by Hamas
The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to an alleged „attack“ by Palestinians on its troops in southern Rafah involving a rocket-propelled grenade and sniper fire.
There were no immediate reports of Israeli casualties.
The armed wing of Hamas, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, denied any knowledge of or connection to the alleged attack. The group said it has had no contact with its fighters in that area since March.
“We have no involvement in any events occurring in those areas and cannot communicate with any of our fighters there, if any of them remain alive,” the group said in a statement, adding that it remains committed to the ceasefire.

Since the ceasefire went into effect on October 11, 35 Palestinians have been killed and 146 others have been injured. The bodies of 414 Palestinians have also been recovered.
Fifteen unidentified bodies previously withheld by the Israeli occupation have also been handed over as part of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal, bringing the total number of bodies received from Israel to 150, delivered in batches of 45, 45, 30, 15, and 15.

Trump says 2 survivors of US strike on submarine being sent to Ecuador, Colombia in move that avoids legal fight
In a legal defense provided to Congress, Trump told lawmakers that the U.S. is in an „armed conflict“ with the cartels and that drug smugglers are „unarmed combatants.“
Some legal experts have said such an argument is unlikely to hold up in court. However, it was unclear who would challenge Trump’s rationale in defense of the drug cartels, with few lawmakers speaking out against it and Trump continuing to expand military operations in the region in recent weeks.
