Grieve’s Brexit amendment could destabilise British government for years to come

As you might expect from Grieve, a QC, it’s well put-together. It identifies a weak point in Britain’s constitutional architecture, and proposes to take a shot. If he hits his target, it might not just take down Brexit but a whole lot more besides.

Jeremy Corbyn is wrong to rule out No Deal and risks keeping Labour out of power for another generation

Any trade unionist engaged in negotiations will tell you that in order to achieve reasonable concessions in any negotiation, you do not rule out the prospect of no deal at the very start. In a negotiation your opponents, whether they are an employer or a bloc of nations, need to be aware that you are prepared to walk away should expectations not be met. In ruling out the prospect of No Deal, a future Labour Government would risk losing all leverage.

Grieve’s amendment would overturn basic principles of government, allowing rebels to take control of the parliamentary timetable with only 46 per cent of MPs, writes @nmdacosta.

Grieve’s Minority Coup D’etat

If his amendment passes a minority of 300 MPs across five parties – with only 10 Tories needed – would be able to control the parliamentary agenda. Effectively creating a minority opposition controlled legislature.

There‘s A Secret Plan By Rebel MPs To Stop A No-Deal Brexit

Legislation could then be tabled by backbenchers to block a no-deal Brexit — something for which there is likely to be a Commons majority.

Previously it has been thought that only the executive would be able to extend or revoke Article 50 to stop the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal.

This band of Remainer MPs pose a threat to Brexit and to democracy

The calamitous situation in Parliament is being exploited by a small band of MPs determined to use any mechanism, however constitutionally absurd and deleterious to the public’s faith in our democratic institutions, to stop Brexit.

Brexit latest: Cross-party Bill bids to force Theres May to postpone leaving EU until 2020

The move, which was launched by Labour’s Yvette Cooper, demands Parliamentary approval for a withdrawal agreement by February 26.

And if the Prime Minister fails, MPs would automatically get the chance to extend Article 50 and delay our exit until the end of the year or even 2020.

The bill is supported by senior backbenchers, including Select Committee chairs and former ministers, from across the House.

The neocon/“left”-liberal interventionist freak out over the only pres candidate who has forcefully defied the bipartisan foreign policy consensus is just beginning. Will be somewhat enjoyable to watch it build to a petulant frenzy this year.

It‘s sad to see her painted as an Assad supporter for opposing the war. During the Bush years, it was all about stopping the neocons. Now their policies control both parties even though Americans have been sick of it for a long time #Tulsi2020

Tulsi Gabbard once touted working for anti-gay group that backed conversion therapy

During her run for state legislature in 2002, Gabbard told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, „Working with my father, Mike Gabbard, and others to pass a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage, I learned that real leaders are willing to make personal sacrifices for the common good. I will bring that attitude of public service to the legislature.“ The quote, which CNN‘s KFile found during a review of Gabbard‘s early career, shows how closely she aligned herself with her father‘s mission at the time.

Howard Dean to CNN: All Dem candidates qualified to be president except Tulsi Gabbard

(17.1.2019) „I mean I‘m really not going to take sides in this,“ he later added. „There are no candidates, with one exception, that I really don‘t think should be president.“

„And who‘s that exception?“ asked co-host John Berman.

„Tulsi Gabbard. I don‘t think she knows what she‘s doing and I don‘t think she … is qualified. She‘s not qualified,“ Dean responded.

„And what‘s that based on?“ asked Camerota.

„About her dalliances with [Syrian President Bashar Assad], her statements about gay people. … I don‘t know what she thinks she‘s doing.”

Trump Offers Temporary Protections for ‘Dreamers’ in Exchange for Wall Funding

But the proposal, which Mr. Trump unveiled in a 13-minute address from the White House, appeared dead on arrival in the Capitol. Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected it even before Mr. Trump spoke, and Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader, denounced the offer as “not a compromise but more hostage taking.”

With the shutdown entering its fifth week and polls showing a majority of the public blaming Mr. Trump, the president’s advisers have been searching for an exit strategy.

State of the Union: History

George Washington delivered the first regular annual message before a joint session of Congress on January 8, 1790, in New York City, then the provisional U.S. capital. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson discontinued the practice of delivering the address in person, regarding it as too monarchical (similar to the Speech from the Throne). Instead, the address was written and then sent to Congress to be read by a clerk until 1913 when Woodrow Wilson re-established the practice despite some initial controversy.
