Ziad Abu Amr, one of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s longtime advisors, would become the de facto ruler of the Gaza Strip, heading the committee. He would be appointed deputy to Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa but endowed with massive new powers.

Abu Amr was born in the Gaza Strip in 1950. He could be palatable to the Trump administration because he is also a US citizen. He obtained his PhD from Georgetown University and served as deputy Palestinian prime minister from 2013 to 2024.

Keith Siegel: A 65-year-old US citizen from North Carolina, Siegel was taken from Kfar Aza kibbutz alongside his wife, Aviva, during the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023. She was released in November 2023.

Ofer Kalderon: A 54-year-old French-Israeli, Kalderon was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz along with his children, Erez and Sahar, who were freed during the last ceasefire.

Yarden Bibas: A 35-year-old Israeli-Argentine, Bibas was taken separately from his wife, Shiri, and their children, Ariel and Kfir, who were also taken from Nir Oz kibbutz. Hamas says Shiri and the boys died in captivity.

About the mission

Launch date: Late February 2025

The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) is a planned two-year mission that will survey the sky in optical as well as near-infrared light which, though not visible to the human eye, serves as a powerful tool for answering cosmic questions. Astronomers will use the mission to gather data on more than 450 million galaxies, as well as, more than 100 million stars in our own Milky Way.

NASA to Preview Sky-Mapping Space Telescope Ahead of Launch

NASA will host a news conference at 12 p.m. EST Friday, Jan. 31, to discuss a new telescope that will improve our understanding of how the universe evolved and search for key ingredients for life in our galaxy.

Agency experts will preview NASA’s SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) mission, which will help scientists better understand the structure of the universe, how galaxies form and evolve, and the origins and abundance of water. Launch is targeted for no earlier than Thursday, Feb. 27.
