Lionel Shriver talks to Allison Pearson: ‚The British people have never more profoundly disappointed me‘

Speaking to The Telegraph‘s Planet Normal podcast – which you can listen to on the audio player above – Shriver told podcast host and Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson she was „dismayed“ with the way Britons have stayed at home without questioning government strategy.

„The British people have never more profoundly disappointed me. It seems so un-British to say, alright then I’ll just roll over and I’ll stay home. I think part of it was being able to feed into the Blitz narrative,“ she said. „The bizarre attachment to being confined to your homes and not making a living and relying on the government…I’m just dismayed.“

WE WILL NEVER SURRENDER: Boris Johnson refuses to apologise for calling Brexit delay a ‘surrender’ as Remainer MPs accuse him of inciting violence with his ‘horrendous, divisive’ language

He‘s repeatedly referred to the new law as the „Surrender Bill“, arguing it means the EU won‘t give us a good deal as they think we‘ll be forced to delay.

A No10 source said today: „If the question is ‚is he going to stop talking about the Surrender Bill‘ the answer is ‚absolutely no he‘s not‘.“

I will battle for Britain in Brussels

Last Sunday, Parliament prepared to hold a series of votes of huge importance to the Brexit process. The menu of choices before MPs was extensive and, in some cases, had far- reaching and long term implications for the way the UK is governed.

MPs were invited to back an amendment which would have given Parliament unprecedented power to direct the Government to extend the Article 50 process – frustrating Brexit and deferring the difficult decisions which remain to be taken before we leave the EU. They voted not to do so.

Brexiteers keep up pressure on PM‘s leadership and ‚serfdom‘ Brexit deal

Ms Dorries added: „MPs will think to themselves, ‚If I vote to keep the prime minister in place she‘s going to be there for the next 12 months when anything could happen, is that what I want?‘ And I think most MPs will vote ‚no‘.“

She defended her description of the Brexit deal as leaving the UK as „slaves“ to the EU.

„I would call us a vassal state, an empty state, I‘d call it serfdom, it‘s appalling,“ Ms Dorries said.
