US Jewish community leader lobbied for prominent Palestinian prisoner Barghouti’s release

Some regional stakeholders have likened Barghouti to formerly imprisoned South African anti-apartheid activist-turned-president Nelson Mandela, and view him as a potential successor to Abbas due to his widespread appeal across various Palestinian factions.

While he has expressed support for “armed resistance” against “the Israeli occupation” in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, he has also backed a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders and spoken out against targeting civilians inside Israel proper.

Israel rejects freeing from prison the most popular Palestinian leader

But some experts say Israel fears Barghouti for another reason: An advocate of a two-state solution even as he backed armed resistance to occupation, Barghouti could be a powerful rallying figure for Palestinians. Some Palestinians view him as their own Nelson Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid activist who became his country’s first Black president.

Israeli media: Dr Hussam Abu Safiya to be freed only if release quota falls short

However, Israeli officials made changes to the list of Palestinian prisoners set to be released, with 1,718 Palestinian prisoners to be freed now, instead of the previously agreed-upon 1,722.

Al Jazeera quoted Hamas as saying that Marwan Barghouti and Ahmad Saadat are off the list of prisoners to be released.

Israeli media have also reported that „the government has approved the creation of a reserve list of five prisoners from Gaza, who will be released if changes are made.“

Gaza ceasefire deal: Hamas, Egypt and Qatar pushing for Marwan Barghouti‘s release

Egypt and Qatar, alongside Hamas, are using „all means available“ to secure the release of Marwan Barghouti as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement between the group and Israel, three sources informed on the negotiations have told Middle East Eye.

The long-imprisoned Palestinian political leader is on a list “of around one hundred senior Palestinian prisoners” being discussed ahead of the second phase of the truce deal, a source close to the negotiations said.

“Marwan alongside [a] few others are at the top of that list,” said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the details.

Like Mandela, Barghouti earned the respect of his people through decades of sacrifice and commitment to the cause. And despite his over two decades in prison, Barghouti remains popular among Palestinians in both Hamas-controlled Gaza and the Fatah-controlled West Bank. Indeed, a December 2022 poll by the Palestine Center for Policy and Survey Research showed that if Barghouti were to run in a presidential election, he would defeat Haniyeh in a landslide victory.

Palestinians condemn Israel’s Ben-Gvir over Marwan Barghouti threat • FRANCE 24 English

Palestinian officials have condemned far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s taunting visit to the jail cell of long-imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti. Footage of the visit shared on social media on Thursday showed the minister making threatening remarks to the 66-year-old. France24 Noga Tarnopolsky reports the latest.

Israel‘s Ben Gvir seen threatening Marwan Barghouti in prison in new video

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has been filmed visiting Marwan Barghouti, the most prominent Palestinian prisoner, and threatening him that Israel will „obliterate“ anyone who opposes it.

It is the first time that Barghouti has been seen publicly in years. Aged and gaunt, wearing a white undershirt, he is almost unrecognisable.

In the video, which circulated on social media on Thursday night, Ben Gvir is seen telling Barghouti: „Whoever messes with the people of Israel, whoever murders our children, whoever murders our women, we will obliterate them. You will not defeat us.“

Barghouti has been in prison since 2004. A senior figure in Fatah, the party that dominates the Palestinian Authority (PA), he was targeted by Israel due to his leading role in the 2000-2005 Second Intifada and popularity among the public.

Qassem Barghouti, Marwan‘s son, told Middle East Eye that his family feels a grave threat to his father‘s life, particularly after this latest footage.

Palestinians, and some Israelis, see Marwan Barghouti as key to peace. They need him out of prison first

(26.03.2024)

„If any Israeli leader really wants an end for this and peace for the region on the long term, they would see that my father is someone that would bring that, who still believes in the tiny chance left for the two-state solution.“

That would be a hard ask for Israelis who see Barghouti as a terrorist with blood on his hands. He was convicted by an Israeli court for his role in the second intifada violence and sentenced to five life terms in 2004.

Barghouti refused to present a defence to a court whose authority he doesn‘t recognize but has denied the allegations.

U.S. raises treatment of imprisoned Palestinian leader Barghouti with Israel

The State Department has not named Barghouti in public statements, but U.S. officials said they are aware of allegations of abuse. The department said in a statement to The Post that it has informed Israel that it must “thoroughly and transparently investigate credible allegations of and ensure accountability for any abuses or violations.”

Time to Free Palestine’s Nelson Mandela

After Hamas’s brutal massacre of over a thousand Israel civilians and Israel’s massive military response, peace may appear inconceivable. Certainly, few would blame those unwilling to forgive the shocking violence of days past. Yet peace does not demand forgiveness of the unforgivable—and shattering events have a way of producing unanticipated consequences.

A prisoner exchange—which historical patterns suggest is likely—could, despite it all, reopen a path to peace.

Hamas and Israel float Marwan Barghouti’s release in future deal: Report

The proposal is under discussion as part of US, Qatari and Egyptian efforts to revive a prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas like the one that brought a short-lived truce to the enclave, according to the Wall Street Journal.

CIA Director William Burns traveled to Warsaw, Poland on Monday for talks with Israeli Mossad chief David Barnea, and the Qatari prime minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani as part of the talks.

Will Marwan Barghouti be the Palestinian Nelson Mandela?

(5.7.2016) Nearly a decade and a half after he began serving multiple life sentences for his role in the killings of the second intifada, Marwan Barghouti is still seen – among most Palestinians, many Israelis and world leaders – as the man who could lead his people to independence. Through a mediator, Barghouti tells Haaretz that he remains a staunch proponent of the two-state solution and that he intends to run for Palestinian president should elections be held.

Israeli occupation is root cause of Palestine conflict, says Marwan Barghouti

Imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti on Sunday delivered an impassioned plea to the international community to tackle the root causes of violence between Palestinians and Israelis, as he praised the “new Palestinian generation” for resisting the Israeli occupation.

In an article for the Guardian written from his cell in Hadarim prison – his first for an international publication since 2002 at the height of the second intifada – Barghouti said he was pleading with the world as then to “to deal with [the violence’s] root causes: denial of Palestinian freedom”.

Palestinian Statehood Bid At UN Security Council Amended

(26.12.) The move came after heavy criticism from Palestinian factions and jailed Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti on the original resolution which was submitted to the Security Council by Jordan on behalf of the PA.

The amendments revolve around articles relating to East Jerusalem as capital of the future state of Palestine, Israeli settlement building, and Palestinian refugees’ right of return.

The new draft resolution will stipulate East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state, specifying particularly that this will be based on 1967 borders.
