Update on the availability of some Galileo Initial Services
Galileo, the EU‘s satellite navigation system, is currently affected by a technical incident related to its ground infrastructure. The incident has led to a temporary interruption of the Galileo initial navigation and timing services, with the exception of the Galileo Search and Rescue (SAR) service.
Galileo sat-nav system experiences service outage
Europe‘s alternative to GPS went „live“ with initial services in December 2016 after 17 years of development. The European Commission promotes Galileo as more than just a back-up service; it is touted also as being more accurate and more robust.
An outage across the entire network is therefore a matter of significant concern and no little embarrassment.
Since its launch in 1978, GPS has become integral to the functioning of all modern economies.
Usage goes far beyond just finding one‘s way through an unfamiliar city. The system‘s timing function has now become ubiquitous in many fields, including in the synchronisation of global financial transactions, telecommunications and energy networks.

Last year, the UK announced that it would explore the possibility of developing its own satellite navigation system after being shut out of the Galileo program due to Brexit. British companies built a number of components for the system, with one of the project‘s two security monitoring centres once based in Swanwick, UK before being relocated to Spain. The UK expressed concerns over losing access to the system, which is used by government agencies and the British armed forces.
China expands use of BeiDou navigation system in transportation
The BeiDou system began providing services in China in 2000 and surrounding regions in the Asia-Pacific in 2012. When the system is completed in 2020, it will be the fourth largest global satellite navigation system after the U.S. GPS system, Russia‘s GLONASS and the European Union‘s Galileo.

Mit Stand Ende 2017 sind 22 der vorgesehenen 30 Satelliten in ihrem Orbit. Bis Ende 2019 sollen alle Satelliten in ihre Umlaufbahn gebracht werden. Das Satellitennavigationssystem ist für die Allgemeinheit seit dem 15. Dezember 2016 zugänglich.(…)
