How the South Korean president‘s martial law declaration unfolded

After South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in the country, thousands of protesters took to the streets alongside the leading opposition Democratic party, urging MPs to head to the national assembly and vote it down.

Following a dramatic night in which soldiers attempted to block MPs from entering parliament, lawmakers unanimously adopted a bill rejecting the martial law declaration, prompting the president to backtrack. Here is how the night unfolded in Seoul

Who’s the traitor here?

Eighteen People Power Party (PPP) lawmakers who broke through police barricades to vote in favor of repealing martial law have since been labeled traitors. So too have the 12 alleged lawmakers who supported President Yoon‘s impeachment. Recently, acting President Choi Sang-mok faced similar accusations after appointing two Constitutional Court justices. But this raises a critical question: Who is betraying whom?

Without the actions of those 18 lawmakers, the PPP would remain tarnished by its complicity in shielding martial law. Without Choi’s decision, the impeachment trial could have descended into a legal quagmire, leaving the nation paralyzed.

South Korea’s ruling party backs impeachment as president refuses to step down over martial law

The People Power Party (PPP) had initially refused to back impeachment, hoping instead Yoon would resign from office. But its leadership said attempts to persuade him had made no progress.

“We tried to find a better way than impeachment, but that other way is invalid,” party leader Han Dong-hoon said. “Suspending the president from his duties through impeachment is the only way for now, to defend democracy and the republic.”

Amtsenthebungsantrag gegen Präsident Yoon Suk Yeol gescheitert

Grund ist eine fehlende Beschlussfähigkeit des Parlaments, weil sich an der Abstimmung nur 195 Abgeordnete beteiligten.

Mindestens 200 der insgesamt 300 Abgeordneten hätten abstimmen müssen. Somit scheiterte die Abstimmung automatisch an der fehlenden Beschlussfähigkeit.

Politics PPP Chair Demands Yoon‘s Explanation, Dismissal of Defense Chief

After a surprise declaration of martial law by President Yoon Suk Yeol and its repeal a few hours later, ruling People Power Party(PPP) leader Han Dong-hoon has urged Yoon to personally explain the situation and immediately dismiss the defense minister, who suggested imposing martial law.
