Governor Walz Statement on Reports of Alleged Department of Justice Investigation

January 17, 2026

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz today released the following statement after reports of an alleged investigation by the Department of Justice.

“Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system and threatening political opponents is a dangerous, authoritarian tactic.

“The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.”

The office of the Governor has not received any notice of the investigation.

The Governor has repeatedly, unequivocally, called for peace and a lowering of the temperature. He has made that appeal directly to the President.

Federal forces have stormed the state, shooting two people and killing Renee Good. The Department of Justice drove six federal prosecutors – including the longtime career prosecutor leading the charge to investigate and eliminate fraud in our state’s programs – to quit their jobs rather than go along with this assault on the United States Constitution. Leaders of the Republican Party have called for impeachment, for the Governor to be put in cuffs, for a day of retribution.

We trust Minnesotans to see past this projection.

Justice Department opens investigation into Minnesota governor and Minneapolis mayor

Walz, in a post on X, did not explicitly address the news reports, but said: „Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system against your opponents is an authoritarian tactic. The only person not being investigated for the shooting of Renee Good is the federal agent who shot her.“

The killing of Renee Macklin Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer last week became a flashpoint for the simmering opposition to federal agents operating within the state.

Nationwide anti-ICE protests call for accountability after Renee Good‘s death

Leah Greenberg, a co-executive director of Indivisible, said people are coming together to „grieve, honor those we‘ve lost, and demand accountability from a system that has operated with impunity for far too long.“

„Renee Nicole Good was a wife, a mother of three, and a member of her community. She, and the dozens of other sons, daughters, friends, siblings, parents, and community members who have been killed by ICE, should be alive today,“ Greenberg said in a statement on Friday. „ICE‘s violence is not a statistic, it has names, families, and futures attached to it, and we refuse to look away or stay silent.“

Protests against ICE planned across U.S. after shootings in Minneapolis and Oregon

Protests against immigration enforcement are planned for cities and towns across the country on Saturday after one federal officer fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis and another shot and wounded two people in Portland, Oregon.

The demonstrations come as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security pushes forward in the Twin Cities with what it calls its biggest-ever immigration enforcement operation. President Trump‘s administration has said both shootings were acts of self-defense against drivers who „weaponized“ their vehicles to attack officers.

Cell phone footage raises new questions about ICE agent’s tactics before fatal shooting

As he approached Renee Good’s vehicle on a Minneapolis street on Wednesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross held up his phone camera and recorded video.

Less than a minute later, he was still recording when he drew his weapon and fatally shot Good as she accelerated.

That extraordinary footage, along with video shot by bystanders and a 3D model created by CNN of the confrontation, shows Good and her wife challenging ICE officers – but also raises new questions about Ross’s tactics and decision to use deadly force.
