Former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath won a Democratic primary to become the nominee for the U.S. Senate from Kentucky, fending off a strong late challenge from a state legislator whose rise to prominence reflected the renewed energy of the progressive movement.
Ms. McGrath, who had the backing of the Democratic establishment, defeated state House lawmaker Charles Booker, according to Associated Press projections.
Regardless of the official „outcome“, Booker fucking won. They‘ve spent the past 6 days just trying to fudge the numbers.
Progressives are riding high after Tuesday’s primary elections in New York and Kentucky have some of the left’s rising stars in position to potentially pull off upsets against candidates backed by Washington Democrats.
“A lot of y’all have been yelling out Breonna’s name,” Booker said from the stage. “She hung out with my cousin T.J., and when he was murdered, she was there. And her death, her killing, felt like losing him all over again. And we stood up in the streets because we had no other choice.”
Kentucky voters weren’t meant to have a choice. Not long after Amy McGrath pulled off an upset victory in her House Democratic primary in May 2018, her phone rang. It was Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic minority leader, with more than just congratulations. No matter how the general election goes, Schumer told McGrath, we want you to be our candidate for Senate against Mitch McConnell in 2020, according to a McGrath 2018 campaign aide.
Krystal and Saagar discuss poll numbers and endorsements of progressive candidate Charles Booker in Kentucky.
State officials anticipate a higher turnout than in past presidential primary years, driven in part by a late surge by upstart Senate candidate state Rep. Charles Booker, who is challenging former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath for the Democratic nomination to take on GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the fall.
McGrath faces a robust challenge from Charles Booker, the youngest Black legislator in the Kentucky House of Representatives. Booker has run to her left, and while McGrath holds a major fundraising advantage, Booker is gaining significant momentum ahead of the primary on June 23.

Progressives see hypocrisy rooted—not in principle or policy—but in maintaining power. “It’s almost like all the rules are thrown out the window if you’re not coming from the left,” progressive strategist Rebecca Katz told me.
