Over 100 die in Germany, Belgium floods despite early warnings

(15.07.2021)

An „extreme“ flood warning was issued early this week by the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS). Professor Hannah Cloke, a hydrologist who set up and advises EFAS, said the death toll, with many more people reported missing, was „a monumental failure of the system.“

„I would have expected people to be evacuating, you don‘t expect to see so many people dying from floods in 2021. This is very, very serious indeed,“ she said.

Global to local hydrological modelling and forecasting – virtual event

ECMWF will host a three-day virtual event titled „Connecting global to local hydrological modelling and forecasting: scientific advances and challenges“ from 29 June 2021 to 01 July 2021.

Abstract submission is open until 31 March 2021. To register or submit an abstract, please visit the workshop page.

The workshop will be organised by ECMWF, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the Hydrological Ensemble Prediction EXperiment (HEPEX) and the Global Flood Partnership (GFP). ECMWF operates C3S and contributes to CEMS. The two services are part of the EU’s Copernicus Earth observation programme.
