Russian forces now control a narrow path across the Dnieper river into the east of Kyiv, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
Russian airborne and special forces troops are reported to be involved in urban clashes in northwestern Kyiv, but mechanised forces such as tanks and armoured vehicles are not yet in the capital.
“Kharkiv has just been massively fired upon by grads (rockets). Dozens of dead and hundreds of wounded,” Anton Herashchenko, Ukraine’s interior ministry adviser, said in a post on Facebook this morning.
It comes as peace talks between Ukraine and Russia started at the Belarusian border.

President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to send a delegation to discuss an end to the conflict, but said he feared Monday’s talks would not result in peace as Russian forces massed outside Kyiv and the value of ruble plummeted overnight.
