Gov. Andy Beshear wants multinational company 3M to release its patent for the N95 respirator — a desperately needed type of protective gear that’s difficult to get during the coronavirus pandemic — so that more manufacturers can start making it.
Earlier Thursday, the White House invoked the Defense Production Act to acquire more masks with N95 respirators from 3M.
In a statement posted Friday, 3M said the White House formally invoked the act to prioritize N95 orders from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The company also said it has gone „above and beyond“ to make enough respirators available in the U.S.

Pence said in Washington State that by the end of next week, enough test kits would be distributed nationally to allow the diagnosis of 1.2 million people. “We’re making great progress,” Pence said.
So far, 12 people have died from coronavirus in the U.S. The deaths have centered around a nursing home in Kirkland, Washington — near Seattle — where there are a large number of suspected patients.
It creates big opportunity, which is especially true for face mask companies after the U.S. Health and Human Services says the U.S. only has 10% of face masks needed for a full-blown virus pandemic. They estimate the U.S. would need at least 3.5 billion medical-grade N95 masks.
Better, the Trump Administration has plans to source millions of masks from 3M to help combat the virus threat. If so, that could generate up to $1 billion in sales for the company. Vice President Mike Pence said in a press conference:
