Russian Drone Enters Romanian Air Space, Two F-16 in Pursuit

On September 13, 2025, Romania’s air defence forces responded swiftly to an unprecedented security incident when a Russian drone intruded into Romanian airspace near the Ukrainian border. The Romanian Air Force scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to intercept the drone, which was detected approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Chilia Veche, Tulcea County.

The F-16 jets tracked the drone until it disappeared from radar, ensuring no invasion of populated areas and preventing any public safety threat.

Romania summons Russian ambassador in Bucharest on Polish drones incident

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) summoned the Russian ambassador to Bucharest on September 11 to convey its position of firm condemnation of the violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones, according to a ministry‘s press release.

„The Romanian side stressed that, by its gravity, implications and scope, the incident represents an unprecedented escalation, as well as a threat to the security of the citizens of an Allied state and strategic partner of Romania,“ the MAE said.

Rutte confirms Poland has requested consultations under Article 4 of NATO Treaty

According to the North Atlantic Alliance website, Article 4 of the NATO founding treaty allows member countries to bring a matter to the attention of the North Atlantic Council (NAC, NATO‘s main political decision-making body) and discuss it with allies.

The article states: „The Parties shall consult each other whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened.“ Since the Alliance was founded in 1949, Article 4 has been invoked seven times.

Poland says it shot down drones that entered its airspace during Russian attack on Ukraine
