Paris attacks play into Israeli right wing’s hands

The unseemly scramble of ministers and politicians to fly to Paris on Sunday perfectly encapsulates the current situation of Israeli politics. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasn’t even planning to go, citing security issues, but when it transpired that his main rivals for right-wing votes, ministers Avigdor Lieberman and Naftali Bennett as well as Eli Yishai, the leader of a new right-wing Haredi party, were all flying, security was swept aside and a special El Al plane chartered.

Meanwhile, Gideon Levy receives a death threat

And all of it was covered – how could it not be? – by a manifest feeling of joy that “now they will understand who we have to deal with,” and also Israel’s most popular current mantra: “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims.”

There are already several places in the city where one can have authentic hummus, and there is a bimonthly Hebrew-language magazine. But a Facebook post that went viral this month, a photograph of a supermarket receipt showcasing the low price in Berlin of a beloved chocolate-pudding snack, has revived a raw debate over the meaning of outmigration.
