Democrats grow bullish on Senate prospects as Georgia voters cast ballots

(09.06.2020)

Also on the ballot Tuesday are primaries with general-election implications, including in the suburban Atlanta district held by retiring Rep. Rob Woodall (R) that Democrats narrowly missed winning in 2018.

Republican candidates include business executive Lynne Homrich, physician Rich McCormick and state Sen. Renee Unterman, while Democrats are choosing whether to renominate Carolyn Bourdeaux, a Georgia State University professor who came within 433 votes of unseating Woodall. Among the five other candidates seeking the nomination are activist Nabilah Islam, state Sen. Zahra Karinshak and state Rep. Brenda Lopez Romero.

Major Problems With Voting in Atlanta as 5 States Hold Primaries

(09.06.2020)

Georgia’s Seventh District was once reliably Republican territory, but it includes an increasingly diverse section of metro Atlanta. Now there are contested primaries on both sides for the seat held by Representative Rob Woodall, a Republican who is not running for re-election. Mr. Woodall won by fewer than 500 votes in 2018, and his opponent in that race, Carolyn Bourdeaux, is again seeking the Democratic nomination. Another Democrat in the race, Nabilah Islam, was endorsed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.
