Understanding the performance impact of Spectre and Meltdown mitigations on Windows Systems

Last week the technology industry and many of our customers learned of new vulnerabilities in the hardware chips that power phones, PCs and servers. We (and others in the industry) had learned of this vulnerability under nondisclosure agreement several months ago and immediately began developing engineering mitigations and updating our cloud infrastructure.

The Shadow Factory: The Ultra-Secret NSA from 9/11 to the Eavesdropping on America

(2008) Closer to home, America’s two major telecom companies, AT&T and Verizon, have outsourced the bugging of their entire networks — carrying billions of American communications every day — to two mysterious companies with very troubling foreign connections. In AT&T’s secret room in San Francisco, a mirror image of all data entering the building is filtered through surveillance equipment supplied and maintained by Narus. Verizon, which controls most of the rest of the country’s domestic and international communications networks, chose a different company. According to knowledgeable sources, that company is Verint. According to these sources, in 2006 Verizon constructed its “secret room” on the second floor of a nondescript two-story building at 14503 Luthe Road in Houston, Texas. Once Verizon receives watch-listed names from the NSA, it then reroutes their Internet communications into that
room, which is packed with secret Verint machines and software. After passing through the Verint hardware, the messages are then transmitted in real time to a central government surveillance hub in Sterling, Virginia.

AT&T engineer: NSA built secret rooms in our facilities

(12. April 2006) The EFF‘s case against AT&T has barely begun, yet it has already brought to light some fascinating details about the methods behind the NSA‘s alleged wiretapping abilities. Mark Klein, a retired AT&T engineer who is now participating in the case as a witness, has released a statement to the media in which he outlines many of the allegations that are currently under seal. Chief among them is his claim that AT&T installed powerful traffic monitoring equipment in a „secret room“ in their San Francisco switching office at the behest of the NSA.

AT&T, Huawei Phone Partnership Killed At Last Second By More Unproven Accusations Of Huawei Spying

Never mind that almost all U.S. network gear is made in (or comprised of parts made in) China. Never mind that obviously NSA allegations show the United States spies on almost everyone, constantly. Never mind that reports have emerged that a lot of the spy allegations originate with Huawei competitor Cisco, which was simply concerned with the added competition. Huawei is a spy. We‘re sure of it. And covert network snooping is bad. When China does it.

Western Journalists Threaten Venezuela

The positive or negative press a government gets in the western media has nothing to do with its record on democracy or human rights. It has everything to with whether or not western elites view it as sufficiently cooperative. Prominent Venezuelan opposition voices are now openly advocating foreign military invasion. If it happens, reporters like Otis and outlets the Guardian should be held primarily responsible. Two decades of relentless demonization of a democratically elected government have been essential to making that crime a possibility.

Meltdown and Spectre Expose the Dark Side of Superfast Computers

„For Spectre in particular, it’s also worth asking why it wasn’t found by Arm or more generally computer scientists who were teaching speculative execution in microprocessor academic courses. One answer might be that people tend to look at the things they know to look at, and Spectre involves a problem that cuts across different disciplines, where people working on one aspect of a technology don’t know as much about other aspects.“
