Open Access Weathers a Governmental Sea Change: 2017 in Review
Of course, Congress’ lack of interest in open access hasn’t stopped the big publishers from pulling every trick in the book to maintain their control of academic publishing. Last year, we noticed an attempt by Elsevier to extend its control of academic publishing beyond the traditional journals it’s dominated for decades. As we said then, the company’s strategy seemed to have become “if you can’t control the content anymore, then attempt to control the processes and infrastructures of scholarly publishing itself.” That trend continued in 2017 with Elsevier acquiring Digital Commons, the platform that serves as the technical backbone for numerous open access repositories.

Varoufakis said that he explained in the interview that DiEM25’s intention is to give European voters the chance to vote in the European elections for candidates from all over Europe, who have embraced its agenda.

(18.12.2017) Martin Schulz’s political maneuvers in the last couple of months have been successful. From a record-low performance, he is gaining momentum across progressives throughout Europe. In his speech, he outlined his vision for a united Europe. Very interestingly, his time frame looked familiar: 2025.
We are not sure whether Schulz has read our proposals on the European New Deal or heard our calls for action. But it is a positive surprise for us to hear that the second strongest political party in Germany is in line with our vision.

Italien im Wahlkampf
Die Generation der 18-Jährigen, die erstmals wählen kann, hat während ihres gesamten Lebens nie etwas anderes erlebt als sozialen und politischen Niedergang. Seit Italien 1999 der Eurozone beitrat, hat es kein wirkliches Wirtschaftswachstum mehr erlebt. Die Industrie produziert heute weniger als damals.
Die Arbeitslosenrate liegt mit offiziell 11,1 Prozent weit über dem EU-Durchschnitt, und die Dunkelziffer dürfte noch wesentlich höher sein. Unter Jugendlichen beträgt die offizielle Arbeitslosenrate 34,7 Prozent. Eine Staatsverschuldung von 130 Prozent des Bruttoinlandsproduktes – mehr als doppelt so viel, wie die EU erlaubt – stellt sicher, dass der soziale Niedergang auch weiter anhält.
In den 18 Jahren seit Einführung des Euro hatte Italien elf Regierungen. Rechte und Mitte-links-Regierungen lösten sich ab. Ihre Politik unterschied sich kaum.
EU-Ratspräsidentschaft: Österreich muss „Zeitfenster“ nützen
