More than a generation ago, a space opened up for a journalism that dissented from the groupthink and flourished briefly and often tenuously in the press and broadcasting. Today, that space has almost closed in the so-called mainstream media. The best journalists have become – often against their will — dissidents.
The lack of curiousity on the part of the American people, the media, and Congress about the purpose of these wars, which have been proven to be based entirely on lies, is extraordinary. What explains this conspiracy of silence, this amazing disinterest in the squandering of money and lives?
Now, zoom out again. Apply the same calculus to the US position across the Greater Middle East and you face what we might start calling the Afghan paradox, or my own quandary safeguarding five villages with only 82 men writ large. Do the math. The US military is already struggling to keep up with its commitments. At what point is Washington simply spinning its proverbial wheels? I’ll tell you when—yesterday.

The United States should learn from the history of Afghanistan and understand that escalating the war will have no particular impact on the outcome. Minus a permanent occupation–which would be ineffective at best, and bloody and cost-prohibitive at worst–the only way to deal with Afghanistan is to deal with its plethora of local powers. And if this means accepting the Taliban, in exchange for a modicum of stability and a promise not to host global terrorist organizations, then so be it. The alternative is an unwinnable, never-ending war.

(27.2.2008) Karlsruhe: Die Salamitaktik der Polizeistaatler ist heute im Grundsatz aufgegangen. Das Bundesverfassungsgericht hat heute zwar das NRW-Verfassungsschutzgesetz gekippt und ein neues Grundrecht auf „Gewährleistung der Vertraulichkeit und Integrität informationstechnischer Systeme“ geschaffen. Das zählt aber nicht, wenn Exekutivbehörden „tatsächliche Anhaltspunkte einer konkreten Gefahr“ haben.
Und:„Die Maßnahme kann schon dann gerechtfertigt sein, wenn sich noch nicht mit hinreichender Wahrscheinlichkeit feststellen lässt, dass die Gefahr in näherer Zukunft eintritt“.
Sie haben auf Ihrem Parteitag eine Rund-um-die-Uhr-Überwachung sogenannter Gefährder beschlossen. Ist derlei nicht unmöglich?
Irene Mihalic: Nein, das ist möglich und wurde auch immer wieder schon so praktiziert. Bei Anis Amri hat man auf eine solche Maßnahme bedauerlicherweise verzichtet.
Es braucht etwa 20 Beamte, um einen Gefährder zu überwachen, richtig?
Irene Mihalic: Ja, zwischen 20 und 30 sind nötig. Solche Fälle gibt es in der Praxis übrigens immer wieder. In Schleswig-Holstein wurde vor kurzem über neun Monate hinweg eine Gruppe von drei Gefährdern 24 Stunden am Tag überwacht. Da war nicht nur die Polizei involviert, sondern auch das Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz – mit insgesamt über 22.000 Personalstunden.Wir sehen: Wenn die Prioritäten richtig gesetzt werden, dann ist so etwas durchaus möglich. Vorausgesetzt, die Ressourcen werden auch bereitgestellt.

On 22 June, Yediot Achronot’s chief military-security correspondent, Alex Fishman, confirmed the Journal’s report and explored the motivation behind it:
“A not insignificant portion of the Syrian rebels in the Golan have adopted the extreme Salafist ideology of Jabhat al-Nusra, an offshoot of al-Qaeda…The Israeli view is that the religious extremist views of the Syrian rebels are less relevant [than their capacity to combat Israel’s enemies – Iran and Hezbollah]. Israel believes that what interests them [the rebels] above all is survival; and that it’s possible to buy their loyalty through material aid which helps guarantee their own security.
„The Journal article gives one the impression that Israel doesn’t always examine closely the views of its allies as long as it gets from them a useful security exchange. According to Israel’s perspective, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. And if Jabhat al-Nusra fights against IS in the southern Golan, and each of them in turn fights against Hezbollah and the Syrian army in the Deraa region – all the better.”

(4.1.2014) The US and UK enjoy close ties for years, but after the reported agreement between UK and the Taliban in Musa Qala district, the smuggling of narcotics and uranium led to disagreement between them.
A US air force base established in Shurab desert between Dilaram and Girishk, US believes it helps ensure better management in the war on terror. The base is protected through several security barriers and it is believed the giant planes used for transportation for mineral resources including uranium.
The deputies said that since the US military intervention back in 2001, the Americans and their British allies have concentrated their bases in this particular province as the largest uranium resources are concentrated there.

Zu ihrer letzten Wahl ist Angela Merkel angetreten mit dem Motto: „Sie kennen mich.“ Das musste genügen. Mit ihrem neuen Wahlprogramm lässt sich die Union noch Zeit, doch schon jetzt drängt sich der Eindruck auf: „Kennt man schon.“
Nicht nur bei der Ehe für alle zeigt die Koalition Auflösungserscheinungen. Finanzminister Schäuble musste nach SPIEGEL-Informationen auch in Sachen Eurorettung eine schwere Schlappe hinnehmen – zugefügt von der SPD.
Angela Merkel hat bei der Ehe für alle keine Kehrtwende gemacht, sondern ist nur einen Schritt zur Seite gegangen: aus dem Weg. Ihr Pragmatismus ist respektlos gegenüber dem Wähler.
Dieses Herrschaftsinstrument, etwas herbeiführen, ohne es zu wollen, gleichzeitig für und gegen etwas zu sein, beherrscht Merkel. Mit dieser Bundestagssitzung hat sie es perfektioniert. Die Unangreifbarkeit lässt offenbar den Blutdruck mancher Abgeordneter steigen. „Danke für nichts, Frau Merkel“, giftet Johannes Kahrs, SPD, im Plenum gegen die Kanzlerin: „Dieses Verschwurbelte, es steht mir bis hier.“
Darüber hinaus berieten die Ressortchefs der Paktmitgliedsländer über den Ausbau der Kooperation zwischen der EU und der NATO, der unter anderem zur Folge hat, dass die offiziell neutralen EU-Staaten Österreich, Irland, Schweden und Finnland noch enger an das westliche Kriegsbündnis heranrücken. Das Gesetz verbessert also nicht die Rechtsdurchsetzung durch Gerichte, sondern es privatisiert die Rechtsauslegung. Nimmt man die eigentliche Rechtsdurchsetzung, fokussiert das Gesetz auf das Löschen statt Strafen, durch private Akteure. Es überträgt also denjenigen, die in ihrer Macht begrenzt werden sollen, zentrale rechtsstaatliche Verantwortung. Nicht einmal ein Widerspruchsrecht für gelöschte Inhalte ist geplant.
