Environmental Contamination at US Marine Corps Bases on Okinawa

Since 2002, at least 270 environmental accidents on U.S. Marine Corps bases on Okinawa have contaminated land and local waterways but, until now, almost none of these incidents has been made public. U.S. Marine internal reports highlight serious flaws in training and suggest that the lessons of past accidents have not been effectively implemented. Moreover, recent USMC guidelines order service members not to inform Japanese authorities of accidents deemed „politically sensitive“, raising concerns that many incidents may have gone unreported.

Techdirt Survival Fund: I Support Journalism

As we mentioned last month, we are currently being sued for $15 million by Shiva Ayyadurai, represented by Charles Harder, the lawyer who helped bring down Gawker. We have written, at great length, about Ayyadurai‘s claims and our opinion — backed up by detailed and thorough evidence — that email existed long before Ayyadurai created any software. Once again, we believe the legal claims in the lawsuit are meritless and we intend to fight them and win. Earlier today, we filed a motion to dismiss (along with our memorandum in support) and a special motion to strike under California‘s anti-SLAPP law (along with a memorandum in support). You can see all of those below. I encourage you read through them.

Leftist vies with ex-banker in nail-biter Ecuador presidency vote

Lenin Moreno, 63, a disabled former vice president, needs 40 percent of valid votes and a 10 percentage point difference with his nearest rival to avoid a second round on April 2 and continue a decade of left-wing rule in the Andean country.

He looked close in an early February poll, with an estimated 38.6 percent of valid votes versus 25.7 percent for his nearest challenger Guillermo Lasso, a 61-year-old former president of Banco de Guayaquil, according to pollster Cedatos.

No faith terrorist says pope: Christian, Jewish, Islamic terrorism don‘t exist

Pope Francis said Friday „no people is criminal and no religion is terrorist“ while „Christian terrorism doesn‘t exist, not Jewish or Islamic“.
Speaking in a message to the meeting of popular movements at Modesto in California, Francis said „facing terror with love, we work for peace“ and that entails „real humanity which resists the dehumanisation manifest in forms of indifference, hypocrisy and intolerance“.

Trump erfindet Attentat in Schweden

«Schaut was in Deutschland passiert ist», schrie Trump. «Schaut, was gestern Abend in Schweden passiert ist … Schweden … Schaut, was in Brüssel passiert, schaut was in der ganzen Welt passiert», sagte Trump.

Einziges Problem: In Schweden gab es keinen Vorfall mit Flüchtlingen. Kein Attentat. Keinen Terror-Anschlag.

Nation‘s Police Chiefs Disagree With Trump‘s New Tough On Crime Executive Orders

„We urge the Administration and Congress to carefully consider new crime policies, and adopt and support those that fight crime effectively. Decades of experience have convinced us of a sobering reality: today’s crime policies, which too often rely only on jail and prison, are simply ineffective in preserving public safety. We need not use arrest, conviction, and prison as the default response for every broken law. For many nonviolent and first-time offenders, prison is not only unnecessary from a public safety standpoint, it also endangers our communities.“

DHS memos describe aggressive new immigration, border enforcement policies

The Department of Homeland Security is set to release guidance on President Donald Trump‘s immigration and border security executive orders that has sweeping implications for undocumented immigrants in the United States and those seeking to enter in the future.
The memos from Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to agency chiefs, obtained by CNN, are the first step to putting Trump‘s aggressive immigration policies in place, with provisions that could make substantial changes to how immigration laws are enforced.
