Telephone conference with David Cameron, Francois Hollande, Angela Merkel and Matteo Renzi

The five leaders discussed in detail the Syrian crisis in the context of implementing the joint Russian-US agreement, as co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group, on cessation of hostilities in Syria starting February 27, 2016.

The leaders gave a positive assessment of the Russian-US agreements, which have received the UN Security Council’s support. They noted with satisfaction that the ceasefire is being generally respected and is already producing its first positive results. Most importantly, it creates conditions for launching a political settlement process in Syria through organisation of intra-Syrian dialogue under the UN aegis.

Berta Caceres Received Death Threats from Canadian Company

Two years after the community set up a road blockade to resist the foreign-backed Agua Zarco dam project on the Gualcarque River, Caceres and her fellow activists found out that Blue Energy planned to build a dam on another local waterway, the Canjel River. The community was never consulted about the project and COPINH publicly opposed the dam.

NATO chief says strong ties with the UAE are vital to international security

In 2012, the UAE became the first and only country in the Middle East or North Africa to open a mission to NATO. The UAE has held joint consultations and exercises with NATO in numerous areas, including maritime security, counter-piracy, proliferation and energy security. Mr Stoltenberg noted NATO signed an agreement with the UAE on exchange of information several years ago as part of that cooperation.

PHOTOS: Arabs and Jews protest planned expulsion of 1,200 Bedouin

Over 300 demonstrators marched outside the Be’er Sheva District Court Thursday against the planned demolition of two unrecognized Bedouin villages, Umm al-Hiran and Atir, in Israel’s Negev Desert. Two villages are slated to be replaced by a Jewish-only community and a Jewish National Fund forest, respectively

Israel demolishes West Bank homes, displacing 36 Palestinians

Bedouin villagers slated for evacuation take their struggle to the streets
After the legal process failed, residents of Atir and Umm al-Hiran protest and vow not to allow their homes to be demolished.
Some 300 residents of the villages Atir and Umm al-Hiran, Israeli Arab lawmakers and other activists from all over the country marched in Be’er Sheva Thursday in protest against the government’s intention of evicting them from their villages and demolishing their homes in order to build a new Jewish community, Hiran, on the ruins.

The public battle is taking place after a long and ultimately unsuccessful legal battle. In January Supreme Court President Miriam Naor rejected a petition by the residents and Adalah – The Legal Center For Arab Minority Rights In Israel‎‏, for another discussion of the future of their eviction.

Libya: How Hillary Clinton Destroyed a Country

“We came, we saw, he died,” exclaimed an ebullient Hillary Clinton, as she exulted over the horrific death of Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi, who was sodomized with a bayonet before being brutally murdered by rampaging militiamen. Visiting Tripoli, the Libyan capital, the American Secretary of State was eager to take credit for the “liberation” of yet another Muslim country by Western powers acting in concert. An extensive and quite revealing New York Times investigation (Pt. 1 here, Pt. 2 here) reports on “a ‘ticktock’ that described her starring role in the events that had led to this moment.

Germany and EU planning to support Ukraine in creating Energy Efficiency Fund

“At present there is support from the European Union and the government of Germany that have assisted us in elaborating the Fund’s conception. They see that Ukraine is interested in implementing this project. The state is investing funds from the budget; there are municipal programs that compensate interests on ‘heat’ credits.(…)
The European Union also shows the ability to provide the Fund with funds. The practical work has been already launched on this project: the government of Germany is financing the analytical group, which will be involved in the development of Energy Efficiency Fund,” the vice prime minister said.

Music of Bombs and Bullets

Environmental sounds challenge Matthew Herbert more than a piano does. With noises of exploding bombs, collapsing buildings, and a dying pig he creates both abstract tracks and happy dance music. Manipulating noises is challenging, provocative, and still new territory, he argues. From the Norient book «Seismographic Sounds»

Gehirnsimulation lernt ohne Lehrer

Computational Neuroscience

PETER OBORNE: It‘s grotesque we only learn squalid truth of catastrophic Iraq invasion drip by drip

(19.10.2015) The email sent by Secretary of State Colin Powell to George W Bush ahead of Blair’s visit to the then US president’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, falls squarely into this category.

Huge mystery has always surrounded this Crawford visit, which took place 11 months before the outbreak of war the following year.

Nobody knows exactly what was discussed between Blair and Bush. Most unusually for a summit meeting, the two world leaders were left alone together for long periods of time with no officials present to advise them or to take notes.
