Der Baden-Württemberger Brandamtmann H. löschte zusammen mit anderen Feuerwehrmännern das Auto, indem sich der NSU-Zeuge Florian Heilig kurz vor seiner Vernehmung beim Landeskriminalamt (LKA) selbst verbrannt haben soll. H.s Aussage vor dem U-Ausschuss steht im Widerspruch mit der Beweisaufnahme der Polizei. Laut des Feuerwehrmannes gab es kein Benzin an Gegenständen im Auto und keinen Benzingeruch. Für die Polizei war das genaue Gegenteil der Fall. Darauf aufbauend wird bis heute behauptet, dass sich Heilig am Stuttgarter Festplatz “Wasen” mit Benzin überschüttet und kurz darauf im Auto angezündet hätte. Ein realistischere Erklärung ist, dass das Benzin erst nachträglich in das Auto geschüttet wurde. Tatsächlich wurde das Auto “entgegen der Gepflogenheiten” vom Tatort abgeschleppt, zusammen mit der darin noch sitzenden Leiche, und an einem anderen Ort nach der Brandursache gesucht.
