Thailand’s aid: The US ignores the law on military funding

Good U.S. relations with Thailand have been important for many years, but they now face two significant challenges.

The first is an impending difficult succession in the country’s monarchy. The second is a hurdle for President Barack Obama — reconciling the federal law that requires a cutoff of U.S. military aid to governments installed by coups d’etat with retaining the close relations that have existed with Thailand.

So far, the Obama administration has chosen to disregard Section 508 of the Foreign Assistance Act in regard to Thailand.

Chart Of The Day: $17 Trillion In Student Debt By 2030

Student Loan Debt is a cancer for our society. This misconception that getting a college education equals a steady career has been dashed by the recession. For-profit colleges pray on undereducated and low-income individuals. Text book prices have risen exponentially while the cost of a quality education has as well.

US-China Geopolitical Standoff: Malaysia’s Role

With the current leadership embroiled in controversies, the U.S. could exploit the situation through its media and influence to dictate Malaysian policy. It is up to the Malaysian politicians to be wise in their decisions and to not fall prey to the internal and external pressure regarding their stance in the dispute. Malaysia’s sovereignty is at stake and given the fact that the U.S. desire to establish a base or at least deploy their troops on the eastern coasts of Sabah is now made possible with the existence of ESSZONE. We can expect to see Malaysia playing a more pivotal role in the ongoing standoff in the Indo-Pacific.

The Dirty War on Syria: Washington, Regime Change and Resistance

This book is a careful academic work, but also a strong defence of the right of the Syrian people to determine their own society and political system. That position is consistent with international law and human rights principles, but may irritate western sensibilities, accustomed as we are to an assumed prerogative to intervene. At times I have to be blunt, to cut through the double-speak. In Syria the big powers have sought to hide their hand, using proxy armies while demonising the Syrian Government and Army, accusing them of constant atrocities; then pretending to rescue the Syrian people from their own government. Far fewer western people opposed the war on Syria than opposed the invasion of Iraq, because they were deceived about its true nature.
