The FBI Snooped on Singer Pete Seeger for 20 Years

His angry letter prompted close scrutiny of his political views and associations by the bureau that ran on into the early 1970s. The suspicion was that Seeger, who died in early 2014, was a security risk with close connections to the Communist party.

The FBI file on him has nearly 1,800 pages – 90 of them are still withheld for security reasons – and journalist David Corn has unearthed details within it of the elaborate efforts made by government agents to document Seeger’s activities, even back to his school days.

Spanish Exit Polls Shows No Clear Winner as Rajoy‘s Vote Slumps

The PP is on course to win as many as 118 seats in Spain’s 350-seat parliament, according to the poll by state broadcaster TVE. The Socialists were neck-and-neck with anti-austerity party Podemos for second place. TVE projected as many as 85 seats for the Socialists, though with fewer votes than Podemos, which would get up to 80 seats. Ciudadanos will win up to 50 seats.

Erdogan Meets With Crimean Blockade Organizers: Naval Provocation Imminent?

Turkish and Ukrainian media have reported that President Erdogan has met with two of the organizers of the so-called Crimean blockade. Earlier this week, another of the masterminds behind the failed ‚food‘ and ‚electricity‘ blockades promised that the radicals would organize a ‚naval blockade‘. Is a provocation imminent? What will Turkey‘s role be?

Erste Verfassungsbeschwerde gegen neue Vorratsdatenspeicherung

How a Nation Self-destructs

Nations are made up of people. Nations are only as strong as the bonds between the people. Strong social bonds, strong nation; weak social bonds, weak nation. Social bonds have many elements; the most important element is how much people care about each other. If people do not care about each other, if they have a “screw you, I got mine” attitude and are not willing to help others in need, then a nation is ready to topple at the first sign of significant stress. If people have a strong social bond, they will work together during difficult times and solve all problems.

The obvious way to prevent future ISIS-style organizations from forming is to oppose Western militarism in all its dreadful forms: CIA coups, proxy wars, drone strikes, counterinsurgency campaigns, economic warfare, etc.

What‘s the Trick? Bashar Assad Still Enjoys Public Support in Syria

Bashar al-Assad, the democratically elected leader of a sovereign country, has been labeled as a „dictator“ and „tyrant“ by the West; however, the Western media-narrative falls apart at the seams as Bashar al-Assad continues to enjoy overwhelming support in Syria, geopolitical analyst Steven MacMillan notes.

War and Natural Gas: The Israeli Invasion and Gaza’s Offshore Gas Fields

(8.1.2009) The December 2008 military invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israeli Forces bears a direct relation to the control and ownership of strategic offshore gas reserves.

This is a war of conquest. Discovered in 2000, there are extensive gas reserves off the Gaza coastline.

British Gas (BG Group) and its partner, the Athens based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC) owned by Lebanon’s Sabbagh and Koury families, were granted oil and gas exploration rights in a 25 year agreement signed in November 1999 with the Palestinian Authority.

The rights to the offshore gas field are respectively British Gas (60 percent); Consolidated Contractors (CCC) (30 percent); and the Investment Fund of the Palestinian Authority (10 percent). (Haaretz, October 21, 2007).

The PA-BG-CCC agreement includes field development and the construction of a gas pipeline.(Middle East Economic Digest, Jan 5, 2001).

The BG licence covers the entire Gazan offshore marine area, which is contiguous to several Israeli offshore gas facilities. (See Map below). It should be noted that 60 percent of the gas reserves along the Gaza-Israel coastline belong to Palestine.

Turkish Paper: New Mossad Appointment Harbinger of Better Ties with Turkey

(10.12.2015) Turkey’s rift with Iran and Hezbollah—both of which are a national security threat to Israel—over Syria, as well as Israel’s future gas sales to Europe, could pave the way for closer relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv, judging by new Mossad chief Yossi Cohen’s positive signals, Yusuf Selman Inanç wrote in the Turkish Daily Sabah Tuesday.

EU Broadens Right To Be Forgotten In Dangerously Vague Ways With New ‚Data Protection‘ Directive

A few months ago, we noted that the EU was working on its new General Data Protection Regulation and Data Protective Directive — and warned that it was putting free speech and privacy on a crash course. We also had a podcast about this with Daphne Keller, from Stanford‘s Center for Internet and Society. While the intentions of the data protection efforts sound good, the actual impact could be quite devastating. The idea is that all these companies are collecting lots of data, and individuals should have more control over what‘s collected and how it‘s used (and abused). Conceptually, that sounds really valuable. But, in practice it can be a disaster — especially if the people who are focused on privacy/data protection don‘t think about or understand the consequences of what they‘re doing.

And now, the EU has announced that the new data protection rules have been finalized — and while there‘s plenty in there that may be useful, these new rules are almost certainly going to create some new dangerous consequences.

Congress passes controversial cybersecurity bill attached to omnibus budget

(18.12.2015) The bill passed by Congress also strips away many of the previous anonymization provisions included in previous versions of CISA, which has drawn significant criticism from the security community. In effect, the new language clears the way for an open channel between tech companies and the government, unaffected by existing privacy laws.

Congressman Who Supports Undermining Encryption Says We Need CISA (Which Undermines Privacy) To ‚Protect Privacy‘

Representative Adam Schiff, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee (the Committee that has most strongly been pushing versions of cybersecurity bills that undermine privacy and provide more surveillance powers) apparently believes that as long as he says day is night and up is down, the world will believe him. In response to Speaker Paul Ryan‘s decision to shove CISA into the omnibus funding bill, Schiff insisted that this was necessary to protect our privacy:

Severe by MY DISCO

More than just a title, Severe pushes MY DISCO’s subtle, intensely focused, minimalist sound to its most terrifying extreme. It is bleak, occasionally uncomfortable, and unpredictably profound. Severe is an album of aggravated tonal darkness and long breaths of disturbing silence, punctuated by pounding stabs and heavy, hypnotic rhythms. It is a minimalist approach to maximum sound, and by far the band’s darkest, heaviest, and most consistent album of MY DISCO’s burgeoning career.
