The FBI has admitted to gathering secret intelligence about the annual Burning Man festival since 2010.
In response to a request under the 2012 Freedom of Information Act, the security service said its Special Events Management unit has kept files on festival-goers, known as ‚burners‘ – to ‚aid in the prevention of terrorist activites and intelligence collection‘.

AngekĂŒndigt werden darin unter anderem „verstĂ€rkte Investitionen“ in die Entwicklung „verteidigungsrelevanter Technologien“: „Sicherheit und UnabhĂ€ngigkeit durch Kompetenz im Bereich kritischer verteidigungsindustrieller SchlĂŒsseltechnologien ist fĂŒr Deutschland als fĂŒhrende Industrienation … von zentraler Bedeutung.“ Die besagten „SchlĂŒsseltechnologien“, deren „VerfĂŒgbarkeit“ laut Kabinett „aus nationalem Sicherheitsinteresse zu gewĂ€hrleisten ist“, sollen erklĂ€rtermaĂen dazu beitragen, die KriegsfĂŒhrungsfĂ€higkeit der BRD zu steigern. Konkret geht es dabei um das Gefecht mit verbundenen Waffen im Rahmen der „vernetzten OperationsfĂŒhrung“ von Heer, Luftwaffe und Marine sowie um Spionagesensorik, „gepanzerte Plattformen“, „Unterwassereinheiten“ und MaĂnahmen zum Schutz der kĂ€mpfenden Truppe. Zwar reden die Autoren des „Strategiepapiers“ ĂŒber weite Strecken der „EuropĂ€isierung“ der RĂŒstungsindustrie das Wort, weil deutsche Unternehmen aufgrund ihrer herausragenden „WettbewerbsfĂ€higkeit“ hierbei „viel einzubringen“ hĂ€tten; die genannten „FĂ€higkeitsdomĂ€nen“ jedoch sollen ausschlieĂlich unter nationaler VerfĂŒgungsgewalt stehen: „Bei der AbwĂ€gung auĂen-, europa- und verteidigungspolitischer Interessen im Rahmen von Beschaffungsentscheidungen wird der Erhalt ausgewĂ€hlter verteidigungsindustrieller SchlĂŒsseltechnologien berĂŒcksichtigt.“
