Herr Dr. Schäfer, meine Frage konnten Sie am Freitag nicht beantworten, aber Sie haben sicherlich recherchiert. Die Frage war: War Deutschland in irgendeiner Form in technische Diskussionen über eine Modernisierung der taktischen US-Atomwaffen eingebunden?
– Herr Dr. Schäfer, auf der einen Seite sagen Sie immer, die Atombomben sollen so schnell wie möglich verschwinden, können aber keinen Zeitraum dafür nennen. Gleichzeitig können Sie nicht ausschließen, dass die Atombomben, die hier sind, erstens noch nicht einmal verschwinden sollen, sondern gleichzeitig modernisiert, erneuert und verbessert werden sollen.
– Herr Dr. Schäfer, eine Lernfrage. Das Friedensforschungsinstitut SIPRI hat berichtet, dass Anfang des Jahres in den USA, Russland, Großbritannien, Frankreich, China, Indien, Pakistan, Israel und Nordkorea insgesamt 15.800 Nuklearwaffen lagern. Wie viele davon gibt es in Deutschland? Das muss die Bundesregierung ja wissen.

Michael Oren said he put “immense pressure” on Random House to publish his new book, Ally, this month, so he could mobilize American Jews against the coming Iranian deal, and they would intercede as they had failed to do in response to the Nazi threat in the 1930s.

Speaking at the 92nd Y last night, Oren said he resigned as Israel’s ambassador to the U.S. in October 2013 and then set out to write his book in a hurry for a “political reason.”

The Jewish killers and torturers and their direct commanders act as they do with official permission. The Palestinian dead and tortured that they have left behind over the past 67 years also have grieving nieces and families for whom bereavement is a constant presence. In university hallways, shopping malls, buses, gas stations and government ministries, Palestinians don’t know which of the people they encounter have killed, or which and how many members of their families and their people they have killed.

But what’s certain is that their killers and torturers are walking around free. As heroes.

Instead of confronting its deeds, perhaps even justifying them as lying in the grey areas of the morality of war, Israelis and their leaders prefer to cling to a world of black and white, one in which we are 100% right and everyone else is 100% wrong, and to lead their flock accordingly. In that respect, it doesn’t really matter whether the UNHCR report was better or worse than Goldstone and whether it presented a fair or skewered picture of the Gaza war: its true significance is that it embeds Israelis ever deeper in their isolated bunkers, in a place where every opportunity is a trap, every risk is existential and every reaction is justifiable, given the circumstances.

The report hints that after all other measures have failed, the ICC is the only thing that can actually deter the two sides from yet another round of fighting.

Sami Turgeman, head of the Israeli military‘s southern command, shocked his audience by saying Israel had an interest in Hamas remaining in power. He also indicated that Israel was determined to deter Hamas from attacking – and expected to face it on the battlefield every few years.

(22.Juni) A senior Qatari diplomat, Muhammad al-Ahmadi, has met several times with an Israeli major-general, Yoav Mordechai—including twice in Israel—to discuss an Israeli-Hamas truce. “We made it clear to the Israeli general that our intentions are to rebuild, not fund terror,” he told Yediot Achronot reporter Smadar Peri during her recent visit Qatar. “No one wants rockets fired at Israel. Hamas is weak and tired.”

(19.Juni) Kuperwasser told NPR that letting Qatar help Hamas will be beneficial for Israel in the long run. “We believe that better conditions in Gaza would lessen the incentive of Hamas and the population to go again to a war, so in a way, it is helping the deterrence,” he said.

He also mentioned that Qatar was the only country willing to help — despite a pledge of over $US5 billion in aid for rebuilding the Strip in 2014 after the war.

Throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia, rightwing governments have increasingly adopted extremist socio-economic policies, slashing social expenditures, labor and welfare legislation, while increasing corporate subsidies and reducing taxes for the elite.

The rightwing has launched increasingly reckless military interventions via-invasions, proxy wars and massive weapon build-ups on the frontiers of Russia, China and Iran, while engaging in military provocations.

Over the past decade fundamental changes have taken place in Southern Europe, which have broken with previous political alignments, resulting in the virtual disappearance of traditional leftist ’parties, the decline of trade unions and the emergence of ‘middle class radicalism’.
New political movements, purportedly on the left, no longer are based on class conscious workers nor are they embedded in the class struggle. Likewise on the right, greater attention is paid to escalating the repressive capacity of the state instead of state intervention in pursuit of economic markets.
