New York, NY– Four Swedish police officers vacationing in New York City were on the subway on Wednesday when a fight broke out. The train operator asked if there were any police riding who could help with the situation. The Scandinavian patrolmen were very soothing and non-aggressive as they de-escalated the situation instead of escalating it, the way we have seen so often from our own men and women in blue.

To the Members of the Subcommittee:

Today I present to you a report entitled, Warlord, Inc.: Extortion and Corruption Along the U.S. Supply Chain in Afghanistan, which has been prepared by the Majority staff of the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
After a six-month investigation, the report exposes the circumstances surrounding the Department of Defense’s outsourcing of security on the supply chain in Afghanistan to questionable providers, including warlords.

The findings of this report range from sobering to shocking. In short, the Department of Defense designed a contract that put responsibility for the security of vital U.S. supplies on contractors and their unaccountable security providers. This arrangement has fueled a vast protection racket run by a shadowy network of warlords, strongmen, commanders, corrupt
Afghan officials, and perhaps others.

Not only does the system run afoul of the Department’s own rules and regulations mandated by Congress, it also appears to
risk undermining the U.S. strategy for achieving its goals in Afghanistan.

(23.Juni 2010) Präsident Barack Obama hat die Notbremse in einem Fiasko gezogen, bei dem sich das US-Militär verselbstständigt hat wie zuvor auch die CIA. Der hochbrisante Kongressbericht, als auch der Artikel des “Rolling Stone”, die Anfang dieser Woche für fundamentales Aufsehen sorgen sollten, wurden genutzt, um den beiden hohen US-Generälen McChrystal und Petraeus einen einigermassen ehrenwerten Abgang bzw Degradierung zu ermöglichen. Das Tempo der Ereignisse läßt durchaus den Schluss zu, dass die US-Regierung die Entscheidungen bezüglich dieser gewaltige tektonische Verschiebung in der Militärpolitik nicht ganz unvorbereitet traf.

McChrystal muss, angesichts der bekannt gewordenen direkten Finanzierung von Warlords und Milizen in seinem Verantwortungsbereich, vor die Wahl gestellt worden sein entweder vom US-Präsidenten wegen nicht zu übersehenden “Versagens” im Afghanistan-Krieg unehrenhaft entlassen zu werden oder es vorzuziehen, seinen Rücktritt mit den im “Rolling Stone” publik gemachten respektlosen Äusserungen über die zivile Regierung zu begründen. Diese Variante sichert McChrystal nun sogar Sympathien der konservativen Öffentlichkeit; alle Seiten haben ihr Gesicht gewahrt, die Hintergründe bleiben im Dunkeln.

McChrystals Vorgesetzter aber, Zentralkommando-Chef Petraeus, er muss über die Dimensionen der “Warlord AG” Bescheid gewußt haben. Petraeus wiederum ist in den zunehmend militaristisch gewordenen USA ungeheuer populär. Eine andere Möglichkeit auch Petraeus elegant zu entmachten, hätte es nicht gegeben. Ihn einfach zu entlassen, hätte ausführlicher Erklärungen und öffentlichen Debatten bedurft, die für die USA insgesamt (wie auch für die kleinen Nato-Anhängsel wie Deutschland) äußerst peinlich geworden wären. So muss nun Petraeus als Afghanistan-Kommandeur die Suppe auslöffeln, die er selbst eingebrockt hat. Der Öffentlichkeit kann man die Angelegenheit als Einsatz eines bewährten Helden an der Front erklären, der sich für die gute Sache quasi selbst degradiert. Auch das Militär insgesamt bewahrt so sein Gesicht, es kann noch nicht einmal so richtig gegen den liberalen Präsidenten pöbeln.

(10.November 2012) The FBI and prosecutors in Florida and North Carolina began investigating the possibility of email hacking, since some of the emails sent by Broadwell contained contents of messages that appeared to come from Petraeus‘s private Gmail account, it was reported.

The sentencing was a disappointing one for F.B.I. officials, who believed that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. had given Mr. Petraeus preferential treatment by allowing him to plead guilty to a misdemeanor and recommending that he receive probation instead of prison time. Federal judges are not bound by such recommendations, but they almost always follow them.

Two versions of bills aimed at sex trafficking are being kicked around by legislators. The SAVE Act (Stop Advertising Victims of Exploitation) passed out of the House last year. The Senate version — the much-less-acronymically-catchy JVTA (Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act) is looking to be no better than the House‘s version, thanks to a last-minute proposed amendment from Senator Mark Kirk, who‘s been dying to kill off Backpages.com‘s adult advertising for quite some time now. And Kirk was able to get this terrible amendment added as part of the „Senate deal“ to finally confirm Loretta Lynch as our new Attorney General.

(13.April) Als erstes Land hat China moderne russische Langstrecken-Flugabwehr-Raketensysteme des Typs S-400 gekauft. Der Rekorddeal hat ein geschätztes Volumen von mindestens 1,5 Milliarden US-Dollar. Viele Staaten buhlen um diese Waffe, die weltweit nicht ihresgleichen hat. Bisher wurde S-400 aber nur an die russische Armee geliefert.

A military source told SANA that the army carried on fierce battles against terrorist organizations in Jisr al-Shoughour area in Idleb countryside, fortified its defensive posts in the vicinity.

Islamist insurgents including al-Qaeda‘s wing in Syria Nusra Front on Saturday captured large parts of the northwestern Syrian town of Jisr al-Shughour for the first time in the four year conflict.

The incident happened at the al-Asad airbase in Anbar province and the warplane was A-10 Thunderbolt, miitary.com reported on Friday.
