‘NYT’ addresses pro-Israel donors’ influence over Congress

The New York Times has finally done it: an honest piece about the Israel lobby’s financial influence over Congress. The Republican side of the aisle, anyway. Reporter Eric Lipton explains that the Republican orthodoxy on Israel is a reflection of big money:

Congress [is] controlled by Republicans who are more fervently pro-Israel than ever, partly a result of ideology, but also a product of a surge in donations and campaign spending on their behalf by a small group of wealthy donors.

‘NYT’ describes Congress as Netanyahu’s wind-up toy

One of the most upsetting things about that New York Times piece yesterday purveying Israeli government propaganda to the unwitting reader was the assumption throughout the piece that the Israeli PM can throw a switch and Congress will jump to his commands.

The article quotes Nahum Barnea, a columnist for Yedioth Ahronoth:

“The dilemma that Netanyahu faces today is not an easy one. He can push the leaders of the Republican majority in the two houses of Congress to try to torpedo the agreement”

Russian experts weigh in on benefits and drawbacks of Lausanne compromise

„Unfortunately, there is a threat that the agreements reached in Lausanne may be disrupted. The compromise agreement on Iran’s nuclear program has many weaknesses, which will be extensively used by Israeli lobbyists in the US and Republicans in Congress. They may deliver some kind of ultimatum to Barack Obama, put him in a difficult position. Apart from that, Iran already accuses Sextet of biased interpretation of the agreements. Tehran interprets the agreements in such a way that all sanctions should be cancelled immediately, while US and EU are talking about a phased sanction relief,“ Arbatov said.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS. I mean by now I can…but I can‘t. You HAVE to watch this video.

As a Hebrew speaker I am appalled…these otherwise pleasant young soldiers are being compelled TRULY — the translation is LITERALLY ACCURATE – to say „Are you Arab? Then you cant pass here“…and „This is just for Jews.“ I understand and speak Hebrew and there is ZERO DISTORTION in the translation of what is happening here. In fact the actual conversation in Hebrew is even worse, more shameful, more conscious on both sides of the shame. Then the tense, inevitable challenge to two young men who are just trying to WALK ON THEIR STREET…“what, are you trying to show you are a man?“ These awful directions — these young people having to say, ‚it is decided…the commander decided…“ when reasonable citizens ask, why can‘t I walk here? As a Jew I am appalled, ashamed, horrified, outraged…they are asking them THEIR RELIGION as armed guards keep them from walking on their own town‘s streets…one guy says, pointing at a woman in a long dress, ‚she is walking‘ and the soldiers have to reply, ‚she is a Jew…“ This is flat out Berlin 1933. Hasbara I say, bring it on. Watch this and come talk to me, I am here, I want to know EXACTLY HOW YOU JUSTIFY A STATE THAT ENFORCES SUCH CONVERSATIONS , I am standing by for your comments or any further justification anyone needs to understand that things categorically need to change. Separation policy in Hebron: Military renews segregation on main street; wide part – for Jews, narrow, rough side passage – for Palestinians

In January 2015, B‘Tselem learned that the Israeli military had renewed segregation on the main street of the neighborhood of a-Salaimeh, Hebron, which leads to the Tomb of the Patriarchs. The military does not allow Palestinians to use the main, paved, part of the street and directs them to use a narrow, unpaved and rough pedestrian passageway.

This segregation had been previously implemented from September 2012 to March 2013. It was discontinued as a result of a short video published by B‘Tselem, which showed Border Police officers explaining that the main part of the street was for Jews only. After the video circulated widely and received much media coverage, the military withdrew the policy and allowed free passage to residents, until recently.
