Invasion of the Data Snatchers

New technologies are making it easier for private companies and the government to learn about everything we do – in our homes, in our cars, in stores, and within our communities. As they collect vast amounts of data about us, things are getting truly spooky!

Empire or Republic: Imperial Wars and Domestic Epidemics. “You Can’t Have Wars and Public Health”

Washington escalates its military interventions abroad, launching simultaneous air and ground attacks in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan; multiplying drone attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia; training, arming and financing proxy mercenaries in Jordan, the Gulf States and Iraq; and dispatching National Guard battalions to West Africa, ostensibly to combat the Ebola epidemic, though they lack the most elementary public health capabilities.

Im Zweifel links: Ein bisschen Mut, Genossen!

Court Tells US Gov‘t That ‚State Secrets‘ Isn‘t A Magic Wand They Can Wave To Make Embarrassing Cases Go Away

Earlier this year, we wrote about the case of Gulet Mohamed, a US citizen who was put on the no fly list and ran into some issues in the Middle East because of that (and by „issues“ we mean he was beaten by Kuwaiti officials for wanting to fly home to Virginia). The DOJ was making some nutty arguments, including claiming that the whole case should be thrown out because „state secrets.“ This is the usual claim in these kinds of cases. Back in August we noted that the judge, Anthony Trenga, was skeptical of this argument, asking for the DOJ to provide a lot more info to back up its claims (in that post we also noted that the DOJ wanted to pretend that the leaked guidelines for how the no fly list works hadn‘t been leaked).

Now the judge has ruled officially and rejected the DOJ‘s argument, saying that they can‘t just claim „state secrets“ and walk away.

100 Year Snow Records broken across the South Eastern US on October 31st and November 01st. It was the earliest and heaviest snow in several places since records have been kept dating as far back as 1880. Reduced sunspot count shows Solar hibernation is occurring along with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) showing a cooling Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation (AMO) Atlantic Ocean temperature is predicted to fall by 2020, which screams of cooling events to take place globally.

Misguided Pianist Asks Washington Post To Remove A Less-Than-Wonderful Review Under Right To Be Forgotten

There are all sorts of issues with the whole „right to be forgotten“ ruling in Europe from a few months back. However, some of the confusion around it has resulted in people thinking it‘s something that it totally isn‘t — leading to some rather public revelations of astoundingly thin skins. Take the case of pianist Dejan Lazic who apparently was not pleased with a less than sparkling review the Washington Post gave him four years ago. The review really isn‘t that bad. It basically just says the performance didn‘t quite live up to expectations, and someone as talented as Lazic should be able to do better. Lazic‘s response? Send the Washington Post (not Google) a demand to take down that review under the right to be forgotten ruling.

U.S.-backed Syria rebels routed by fighters linked to al-Qaeda

Jabhat al-Nusra has long been regarded by Syrians as less radical than the breakaway Islamic State faction, and it had participated alongside moderate rebels in battles against the Islamic State earlier this year. But it is also on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations and is the only group in Syria that has formally declared its allegiance to the mainstream al-Qaeda leadership.

Robert Fisk: Do those who flaunt the poppy on their lapels know that they mock the war dead?

As a young boy, I also went to Ypres with my Dad, stayed at the „Old Tom Hotel“ (it is still there, on the same side of the square as the Cloth Hall) and met many other „old soldiers“, all now dead. I remember that they wanted to remember their dead comrades. But above all, they wanted an end to war. But now I see these pathetic creatures with their little sand-pit poppies – I notice that our masters in the House of Commons do the same – and I despise them. Heaven be thanked that the soldiers of the Great War cannot return today to discover how their sacrifice has been turned into a fashion appendage.

Afghan policemen forced to sell their weapons due to lack of salary

Many of the law enforcement officers that were previously on the content of the Afghan government and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), are forced to sell their personal weapons. Often, the buyers come from the local population, but sometimes the arms, ammunition and uniforms are transmitted directly to the militants of „Taliban“ movement.

The headquarters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs rejects the message of the critical situation in the ALP, said the agency. „The information on the sales of arms by our officers to extremists is not true,“ the information department of the Ministry said.

In late October the law enforcement officers in Kabul held a mass demonstration warning the central authorities publicly of the possibility of police units switching to the Taliban side if the salary is not paid.

US approved Ferguson no-fly area to keep press out

„Any evidence that a no-fly zone was put in place as a pretext to exclude the media from covering events in Ferguson is extraordinarily troubling and a blatant violation of the press‘s First Amendment rights,“ said Lee Rowland, an American Civil Liberties Union staff attorney specializing in First Amendment issues.
