Obama Pushes Africa Investment as US Corporations ‚Drool‘ over Resources

Obama took the opportunity to announce $7 billion in what the White House describes as „new financing to promote U.S. exports to and investments in Africa.“ Obama also championed $14 billion in new investments by U.S. corporations in Africa, which includes $5 billion from Coca-Cola for manufacturing equipment. This is in addition to another $12 billion in new commitments for Obama‘s Power Africa initiative, which will give multinational corporations—including GE—billions of dollars in energy deals to „double the number of people with access to power in Sub-Saharan Africa.“ The total bill comes to $33 billion for „supporting economic growth across Africa and tens of thousands of U.S. jobs,“ according to the White House.

U.S. Sanctions Erode Its Foreign Influence

A few days ago the Leveretts looked at the effects of U.S. financial sanctions and the other ways the U.S. pisses off major countries. They find that the current path of U.S. foreign policy will erode the U.S. dollar hegemony and lead to a destruction of the „extraordinary privilege“ (de Gaulle) the U.S. has had with the ability to print the world‘s reserve currency. The political erosion of the dollar will be felt in the commodity markets and especially in energy deals which will then have further effects in foreign relations: Petrodollars, Petroyuan, and the Ongoing Erosion of American Hegemony

T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Sprint accused of violating transparency rule in throttling cases as FCC considers abolishing net neutrality

All four major service providers in the U.S. have been accused of violating the last remaining net neutrality rule, a day after President Barack Obama said he was against the Federal Communication Commission‘s proposal to institute controversial internet „fast lanes“ that would further threaten equality for web-based companies.

T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all been accused of violating the transparency rule left in place to help safeguard net neutrality after a federal appeals court ruling knocked down several anti-discrimination and anti-blocking regulations.

Leaked Files: German Spy Company Helped Bahrain Hack Arab Spring Protesters

The documents show that FinFisher, a German surveillance company, helped Bahrain install spyware on 77 computers, including those belonging to human rights lawyers and a now-jailed opposition leader, between 2010 and 2012—a period that includes Bahrain’s crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. FinFisher’s software gives remote spies total access to compromised computers. Some of the computers that were spied on appear to have been located in the United States and United Kingdom, according to a report from Bahrain Watch.

First BRICS Bank, Now BRICS Food Bank

Despite President Obama‘s dictating that Russia is increasingly „isolated,“ it appears they have found a whole new set of friends to play with in the global trade sandpit. In retaliation to Western sanctions, Putin yesterday unveiled a total food import ban from all sanctioning nations, and, just as the BRICS created their own ‚IMF-lite‘ away from Washington‘s prying eyes, Russia plans to substitute banned goods with not just domestic supplies but imports from Latin America, China, and several other nations. Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fedorov said „no food shortages are expected,“ but more isolation for the West…

Was war da los, Herr Woidke?

MONTREAL JEWS OCCUPY THE LOBBY OF FEDERATION CJA BUILDING, PROTESTING ISRAEL’S MASSACRE AND SIEGE ON GAZA

Montreal. August 7, 2014.

This afternoon, a group of Montreal Jews gathered in the lobby of the Federation CJA’s building to denounce the ongoing assault on Gaza and the organized Jewish community’s complicity in it. We hung a banner that read: “Massacre à Gaza: CIJA is complicit” and distributed flyers explaining the reasons for our presence. A yiddish resistance poem, ‘Es Brent,’ was read and an analysis of the current situation was provided.

Israel’s fake victory

The national chorus is trying to fake a victory. In the absence of many achievements, they’re also trying to fake the fall of Hamas. Previously it had faked “national unity,” “steadfastness” and of course the heroism and morality of the Israel Defense Forces. It has dismissed the volleys of global criticism as anti-Semitism.

Tell Jewish Institutional Leaders: Say No to Israel‘s Attack

Rabbi Steve Gutow, Rabbi David Sapperstein, and Jerry Silverman and the organizations they lead – the Jewish Council on Public Affairs, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and the Jewish Federations of North America – all support Israel‘s attack on Gaza. Join me in asking them for real moral leadership in this terrible time:

Against the war: the movement that dare not speak its name in Israel

Gideon Levy doesn‘t want to meet in a coffee bar in Tel Aviv. He is fed up with being hassled in public and spat at, with people not willing to share the table next to him in restaurants. And now he is fed up with the constant presence of his bodyguards, not least because they too have started giving him a hard time about his political views. So he doesn‘t go out much any more and we sit in the calm of his living room, a few hundred yards from the Yitzhak Rabin Centre.

Children in israeli Military detention: Observations and Recommendations

(6. März 2013) In the majority of cases, the principal evidence against the child is the child’s own confession, in most cases extracted under duress during the interrogation. Sometimes the child is implicated in a confession given by another child. In some cases the children unknowingly sign a ‘confession’, written in Hebrew (which most Palestinian children do not understand), after being advised that ‘confessing’ is their only way out of the military detention system. Although many children reported providing confessions as a result of ill-treatment, few raise this matter before the court for fear that their complaints would lead to harsher sentences, even though international law prohibits the use of evidence obtained under duress by a court.

Ultimately, almost all children plead guilty in order to reduce the length of their pretrial detention. Pleading guilty is the quickest way to be released. In short, the system does not allow children to defend themselves.

Marek Edelman: Last surviving leader of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising against the Nazis

These words are taken from The Ghetto Fights, Marek Edelman‘s stunning memoir of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in 1943 against the Nazi Holocaust in Poland. They describe the amazing escape for the lucky few from the Ghetto‘s burning remnants. The Nazis had finally set the Ghetto on fire because, Edelman says, that was the only way they could win and „save their military honour“.
