Ivins Rosier was found guilty in May on charges of cruelty to animals with a firearm, burglary of a dwelling with a firearm and shooting into a building in connection with the Nov. 18, 2012 shooting of the dog while breaking into Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Boody’s home. Rosier’s co-defendant, 20-year-old Gilson Gilles, is still awaiting trial on the same charges.

An FBI Counterterrorism Agent Tracked Me Down Because I Took a Picture of This
Good morning. My name is James Prigoff. I am 86 years old and a retired senior corporate executive, having been president of a Levi Strauss division and previously the senior vice president of the Sara Lee Corporation in Chicago. I am also a professional photographer – in fact, I have been a photographer for most of my life. My specialty is photographing murals, graffiti art, and other community public art. I am the co-author of three books utilizing my photographs, one of which, Spraycan Art, has sold over 200,000 copies. My photographs appear in countless other publications and my photography has been exhibited at the Smithsonian in Washington and in many other galleries. I have lectured on photography and public art in museums, universities, and venues worldwide.

The surveillance—apparently conducted under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)—is troubling for many reasons. It is also a reminder that even targeted surveillance authorities like FISA can be abused.

A Vital Civil Rights Movement to Confront the Corporate Ownership of Democracy
Pushing back against this possibility is MaydayPAC, founded by Harvard Law School professor, author and long-time activist Lawrence Lessig. He and his co-conspirators, urging people to „embrace the irony“ of raising money to fight big money, have devised a remarkable, multi-stage, long-term political action plan aimed at winning key congressional races in 2014 and 2016, revving up national momentum and producing, by 2017, national legislation reforming the way elections are funded.
„Indonesia Is on a Different Path“: US-Trained General Defeated After Alleged Plot to Rig Vote
An initial count in Indonesia’s hotly contested presidential election shows Jakarta Gov. Joko Widodo has a several-point lead over former army general Prabowo Subianto. Prabowo has refused to concede defeat, and official results won’t be known until after July 20. The American journalist Allan Nairn recently reported Indonesian forces tied to Prabowo have waged a campaign to rig the election in his favor, including „ballot tampering, street violence and threats“ against rivals.

Man Sues Feds After They Target Him for Photographing Rainbow Art
When 86-year-old photographer James Prigoff paused to photograph a natural gas storage tank in Boston 10 years ago, he was simply doing what countless of tourists have done before. The colorful tank, painted with a rainbow-like design, is a popular photo op. He had no reason to suspect his snapshot would prompt an ominous visit by a federal agent months later and the addition of his name to a government database of suspicious activity.

White House opposes ban on cooperation with Russia on nuclear non-proliferation
Barack Obama‘s administration opposed the adoption of a bill that would suspend nuclear non-proliferation cooperation with Russia. The document approved by the House of Representatives „unduly restricts“ the US Department of Energy interaction with Russia.
In fact, the bill passed recently by the lower house of Congress not only limits but bans the use of budget funds on joint projects with Russian Ministry of Energy. The reasons for this decision are not listed in the document. But all restrictions on cooperation with Russia set by the US lawmakers were related to the situation around Ukraine. At the same time, the bill contains a provision allowing to continue contacts with Russia, if the Minister of Energy finds that „such activities in the interest of US national security.“
However, even with this amendment the Obama administration regarded the document as unacceptable.
Royce: White House in ‚Dramatic Retreat‘ from Security Norms in Nuclear Trade

TPP Negotiations in Canada Are Targeting an Open Internet
The only way we even know about some of the huge new copyright impacts is because a draft copy of the secretive draft agreement was provided to Wikileaks. The draft shows that the U.S. is trying to get its partners onboard with a notice-and-takedown regime for copyright infringement.
You may know the practice by its Americanized nom de guerre: the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Pillay alarmed at mounting civilian toll in Gaza, appeals to all sides to abide by international law
For its part, the Government of Israel must take all possible measures to ensure full respect for the principles of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack, during the conduct of hostilities, as required by international humanitarian law. In all circumstances, they must avoid targeting civilians.
However, we have received deeply disturbing reports that many of the civilian casualties, including of children, occurred as a result of strikes on homes.
Such reports raise serious doubt about whether the Israeli strikes have been in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
UN doubts legality of Israeli air campaign

The statement comes after the IDF on Thursday afternoon sent telephone warnings to 100,000 residents of Gaza, telling them to evacuate the area near the security border in an indication of an imminent ground entry.
EURO-KAPITALISMUS, Zypern: Der Bundesnachrichtendienst und die “reichen Russen”
Oh, By the Way, Germany Spies on Us
In his book Spies Among Us, former NSA intelligence and computer systems analyst Ira Winkler details Project Rahab hackers‘ successful infiltration of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), which provides the network for financial institutions worldwide to send and receive trillions of dollars in a secure and reliable environment. The ability to monitor SWIFT transactions would provide German businesses a leg up — at least.
Pakistan’s War on Terror con
(17. April 2012) There is a distinct, if little discussed, downside to being a superpower and acting as the self-appointed global policeman with a multitude of targets. An arrogance feeding on a feeling of invincibility and an obsession with winning every battle blind you to your own impact and even to what might be to your long-term benefit. In this situation, as your planet-wide activities become ever more diverse, frenzied, and even contradictory, you expose yourself to exploitation by lesser powers otherwise seemingly tied to your apron strings.
Pakistan, twice during America’s 33-year-long involvement in Afghanistan made a frontline state, is a classic example of that. Current policymakers in Washington should take note: It’s a strategy for disaster.

The United Nations human rights chief on Friday voiced serious doubts that Israeli‘s military operation against Gaza complied with international law banning the targeting of civilians, and called on both sides to step back from the brink.

(5. Juni 2014) A Pakistani High Court has ordered police to charge ex-CIA station chief Jonathan Banks for the murder of civilians in a 2009 drone strike. Prosecutors say he issued ordered the deadly strike and was directly responsible for the deaths.
Judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui issued the ruling after hearing a petition from drone activist Kareem Khan, whose son and brother were killed in the 2009 strike in the North Waziristan tribal district.
Pakistani media ‚name‘ CIA station chief in Islamabad
(9. Mai 2011) The CIA chief, Leon Panetta, said last week that he did not warn Pakistan‘s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) about the raid because he feared the information could leak in advance, prompting furious ISI denials of complicity.
Publication of an American spy‘s name caused friction between the two agencies six months ago.
The previous station chief, Jonathan Banks, was identified in court papers and the media in December, causing him to leave Pakistan immediately. Some US officials blamed the ISI for the leak.
Doppelagenten in befreundeten Nationen?

On How UK‘s Political Elite Shoved Through A Data Retention Bill
Politicians are supposed to represent the will of the public. It rarely works that way in practice, but the strongest demonstration of that may be what‘s happening in the UK with this new data retention bill. We wrote about it earlier, but MP Tom Watson has more details on how this is an „erosion of political trust,“ in which leaders of multiple parties in Parliament worked together to do a deal that clearly goes against the will of the public, and then sought to shove it through with no debate at all.

Israel‘s assault on Gaza is ‘collective punishment of the Palestinian people’
The Israeli establishment cynically uses murderous assault in order to pursue the pre-existing agenda, which is an imperialist agenda aimed at undermining Hamas, former Irish Socialist Party MEP Paul Murphy told RT.
