Today Is the Eleventh Anniversary of an Enormous Opportunity

This is really a FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY.

And for them it is. It‘s an opportunity for them to do whatever they wanted to do before, but couldn‘t get away with. It‘s an opportunity for them to smear anyone who criticizes them as disloyal. It‘s an opportunity for them to become much more powerful than they ever could be in peacetime. Leaders love war. That‘s why there‘s so much of it.

It‘s understandably hard for normal people to come to terms with this. It‘s scary to believe your leaders may secretly be, uh, not so sad if you die. But all you have to do is listen to them, and they‘ll tell you.

Can we change this? Maybe. But the first step in changing reality is facing it, no matter how ugly and frightening it is.

Happy September 11th.

EFF‘s Cheat Sheet to Congress‘ NSA Spying Bills

The veil of secrecy around the government‘s illegal and unconstitutional use of both Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act and Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is being lifted. As a result, Congress has seen a flurry of legislation to try and fix the problems; however, as we‘ve been saying since June there are far more questions than answers about the spying. And Congress must create a special investigative committee to find out the answers. Right now, the current investigations are unable to provide the American public with the information it needs.

United Nations investigators have listed a wide range of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Syria, but provided no conclusion on the issue of chemical weapons use.

„On the evidence currently available, it was not possible to reach a finding about the chemical agents used, their delivery systems or the perpetrators,“ the team probing human rights violations in Syria said in its latest report on Wednesday.

Al-Qaeda‘s air force still on stand-by

Fly me to the (war) moon
There are no signs that the Obama administration is prepared to even reconsider the yo-yo „Obama doctrine“ all across the Middle East. This would imply dumping the Saudi-Israeli axis and making a concerted effort for the success of the Geneva II conference, the only possible diplomatic solution for the Syrian tragedy.

I have argued before that the (farcical) emperor is just a paperboy – a docile employee. Those who are paying for the upcoming lethal production, as in the House of Saud, or cheering in the sidelines, as in the Israel lobby, simply won‘t give up.

Obama Syria speech: Full text

I have therefore asked the leaders of Congress to postpone a vote to authorise the use of force while we pursue this diplomatic path. I‘m sending Secretary of State John Kerry to meet his Russian counterpart on Thursday, and I will continue my own discussions with President Putin. I‘ve spoken to the leaders of two of our closest allies, France and the United Kingdom. And we will work together in consultation with Russia and China to put forward a resolution at the UN Security Council requiring Assad to give up his chemical weapons and to ultimately destroy them under international control.
