Pollard Revisited: Is Mr. X Spying Again in Washington?

(May 18, 1997)

For more than a decade, the bureau and officials at the Department of Justice have been obsessed with the suspicion that Israeli intelligence is running a mole inside the administration. This conviction originated in November 1986, following the arrest of Jonathan J. Pollard at the gates of the Israeli Embassy. Pollard, a U.S. citizen of Jewish origins, worked as an analyst at the counterterrorism center of U.S. Navy intelligence. He was sentenced to life in prison for spying on behalf of a secret Israeli intelligence unit called Lakam, a Hebrew acronym for Scientific Liaison Bureau.

U.S. prosecutors and investigators believed that Pollard and his Israeli handlers were helped by another American, referred to as Mr. X, who probably was a senior administration official. Mr. X provided the reference numbers that helped Pollard pull out requested files from America’s most-secret intelligence computers. But the investigators could not uncover Mr. X. Now, the FBI is eager to determine whether the old Mr. X of the Pollard affair is Mega.

Who Is Mega?

(May 18, 1997)

IS THERE AN ISRAELI SPY ATthe heart of the U.S. government? In January the National Security Agency decrypted a phone call between the Israeli Embassy in Washington and Tel Aviv talking of „“Mega,“ in a context suggesting Mega is a highly placed spy. Since then, the FBI has been hunting for Mega, even starting surveillance of top National Security Council and State Department officials. The FBI is also revisiting the last U.S./Israel spy scandal, in which navy intelligence analyst Jonathan Pollard was found guilty of passing top-secret documents to Israel. Agents on that case never cracked a bigger mystery: who told Pollard‘s Israeli handlers which documents to ask for? The FBI is wondering if it was Mega and is irate that word of its hunt has leaked. Some agents suspect the leak was meant to warn Mega to lie low.

Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard set to be released on parole after almost 30 years

Although the decision from the US Parole Commission came around the same time as a sharp disagreement between the US and the Israeli governments over a nuclear deal with Iran, officials from both countries have strongly denied the release was in any way tied to that arrangement, or was intended as a concession to Israel.

Jonathan Pollard, American who spied for Israel, to get parole

DiGenova said that U.S. intelligence authorities suspect that some of the material obtained from Pollard was bartered to the Soviet Union in return for the release of Soviet Jews to Israel, and that U.S. intelligence “assets” in the Soviet Union were compromised and possibly killed as a result.

MSM avoids central Pollard question: Did Israel trade secrets to Soviets for emigres?

A year back we called for Jonathan Pollard’s release on humanitarian grounds– the guy’s been in prison 30 years. But we’re both a little irritated by the media’s coverage of his crimes. The media aren’t talking about an issue at the center of the case: how much of Pollard’s disclosures were turned over to the Soviet Union, and put others’ lives at risk.

Typical is a New York Times piece on Pollard by Ronen Bergman, an Israeli, saying that the reason Pollard spent so much time in prison was the “nationalistic campaign” mounted by Israelis and his wife, which evidently irked US authorities.

Israel Is Spying In And On The U.S.? Part 1

BRIT HUME, HOST: It has been more than 16 years since a civilian working for the Navy was charged with passing secrets to Israel. Jonathan Pollard pled guilty to conspiracy to commit espionage and is serving a life sentence. At first, Israeli leaders claimed Pollard was part of a rogue operation, but later took responsibility for his work.

Now Fox News has learned some U.S. investigators believe that there are Israelis again very much engaged in spying in and on the U.S., who may have known things they didn‘t tell us before September 11. Fox News correspondent Carl Cameron has details in the first of a four-part series.

US officials: Extent of Israeli spying ‘shocking’

“There are no other countries taking advantage of our security relationship the way the Israelis are for espionage purposes,” one former aide who attended a classified briefing on the issue told Newsweek. “It is quite shocking. I mean, it shouldn’t be lost on anyone that after all the hand-wringing over [Jonathan] Pollard, it’s still going on.”

Yair Lapid‘s Teary Plea for Convicted Spy Jonathan Pollard‘s Freedom

“Twenty eight years is more than enough,” said Natan Sharansky, chairman of the Executive of the Jewish Agency. “Today, when there is a growing consensus in favor of Pollard’s release amongst former Pentagon and CIA officials, American figures, legal authorities, the Israeli government, and American Jewish leaders, the time has come to vigorously and loudly demand his freedom. ”

Israel reportedly to pay Zygier’s family millions

Meanwhile the long-retired senior Mossad official Rafi Eitan, who “ran” American spy-for-Israel Jonathan Pollard in the 1980s, said Friday it was quite possible that there were other “Prisoner X’s” — people held in Israeli jails under assumed names, as Zygier was, for reasons linked to intelligence work.
