In Syria, Rebel Victories At Ramouseh Come With A Price

(6.8.2016) But this battle also comes at a price — a key Al-Qaeda-linked group has helped spearhead the attack on the city. Operating under the umbrella organization Jaish al-Fatah, Army of Conquest, the newly rebranded Al-Nusra Front, now Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, used suicide sappers and tunnel bombs to break open the Syrian Army‘s battle lines and main defenses, through which various rebel groups are now streaming. As David Patrikarakos explained for RFE/RL on August 4, while many more moderate rebel groups also played very important roles, Al-Qaeda‘s leading role may impact the entire trajectory of the war moving forward.

Die indoktrinierte Elite

„Sehr geehrte Herren,
Lassen Sie mich trotzdem einige ergänzende Worte sagen.

The Mother of all Hypocrisy

Even the leftist but hardly pro-Syrian Israeli writer Uri Avneri – briefly, in his life, a detective – has asked why Assad should commit such a crime when his army and its allies were winning the war in Syria, when such an attack would gravely embarrass the Russian government and military, and when it would change the softening western attitude towards him back towards open support for regime change.

US Has Given Green Light for Coup in Venezuela: Maduro

Preparing the Battlefield

(Juli 2008) The covert operations set forth in the Finding essentially run parallel to those of a secret military task force, now operating in Iran, that is under the control of JSOC. Under the Bush Administration’s interpretation of the law, clandestine military activities, unlike covert C.I.A. operations, do not need to be depicted in a Finding, because the President has a constitutional right to command combat forces in the field without congressional interference. But the borders between operations are not always clear: in Iran, C.I.A. agents and regional assets have the language skills and the local knowledge to make contacts for the JSOC operatives, and have been working with them to direct personnel, matériel, and money into Iran from an obscure base in western Afghanistan. As a result, Congress has been given only a partial view of how the money it authorized may be used. One of JSOC’s task-force missions, the pursuit of “high-value targets,” was not directly addressed in the Finding. There is a growing realization among some legislators that the Bush Administration, in recent years, has conflated what is an intelligence operation and what is a military one in order to avoid fully informing Congress about what it is doing.

Court: No Immunity For Federal Agent Who Made Elderly Woman Stand In Urine-Soaked Pants For Two Hours While He Questioned Her

The „she“ here is Joann Davis, whose late husband worked on the Apollo program. He was given two Apollo souvenirs by Neil Armstrong — paperweights containing pieces of a moon rock and a heat shield, respectively. Davis was looking to sell the items to a collector to defray her son‘s medical expenses. She asked NASA for assistance, which turned out to be a mistake. NASA sent the feds after her.

Davis may have told the government what she was up to, but the government didn‘t return the favor. Instead, it decided to engage in sting operation, because that‘s obviously the best way to deal with a 74-year-old woman trying to pay medical expenses — and who had made the government fully aware of her NASA-related items and her planned sale of them.

„Jeff,“ the government‘s undercover man posing as an interested buyer, met with Davis at a Denny‘s. Outside were six armed federal agents. The only person with Davis was her 70-year-old friend, Paul Cilley. From the opinion [PDF]:

No more playing policeman in Africa

Like his predecessors, the French president has played the role of policeman of Africa during his five years in office, also deploying an anti-terrorist security umbrella (Operation Barkhane) that covers Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger, as well as the Central African Republic, and supporting Nigeria against the jihadist threat of Boko Haram.

According to Olakounle Gilles Yabi, former West Africa project director for the International Crisis Group, ‘the field of intervention of France’s armed forces, with the agreement of local countries, has never been so big’. More than 55 years after many African countries gained independence, France still maintains a network of military bases in Africa, though these have been reorganised.

Goldman Sachs licks wounds in equities trading as peers grab share

REUTERS: Goldman Sachs Group Inc on Tuesday became the first Wall Street bank this earnings season to report lower equities trading revenue, signaling it was unlikely to reclaim the top market share ranking from Morgan Stanley any time soon.
People familiar with the business said a combination of outdated trading technology, a late effort to court quantitative funds and overall fee pressure on the bank‘s key clients has blunted Goldman‘s edge. It now ranks No. 2 behind its biggest rival.

U.S. Says No Change to THAAD Deployment

That‘s an alliance decision back, I guess, over a year ago now or about a year ago, and we have been sort of continuing apace in that decision,“ she said. „There hasn‘t been any change, and there hasn‘t certainly been anything about the decision-making process that would indicate any change.“
Thornton‘s statement came after reports of a possible delay caused by remarks by a White House advisor who was accompanying U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on his trip to Seoul.

China eases yuan outflow controls in sign of recovered confidence

While the policy relaxation didn’t cover cross-border foreign exchange flows or big outbound investment deals, especially overseas investments initiated by Chinese companies that don’t relate to their core businesses, it was the first relaxation of outbound capital control in nearly two years, the sources said.
