Die tĂŒrkische Polizei ist gestern mit Wasserwerfern gegen eine Gruppe von Demonstranten vorgegangen. Bei den meisten von ihnen handelte es sich um Studenten der âKocaeli-UniversitĂ€tâ in Izmit. Anlass des Protestes war es, dass zehn Wissenschaftler der UniversitĂ€t âwegen angeblicher Verbindungen zu verbotenen Gruppenâ vom Dienst suspendiert wurden. Angeblich wollten die Studenten eine Kundgebung veranstalten. Diese hatte die Polizei dann aber gewaltsam unterbunden.
Zehn der Studenten sollen festgenommen worden sein.
Seit dem versuchten Putsch in der TĂŒrkei letzten Juli wurden ĂŒber 40.000 Staatsbedienstete festgenommen und mehr als 125.000 vom Dienst suspendiert.

Da es 2016 nur noch 1160 Verkehrstote gab, sind das nun sogar schon sechsmal so viele.

Syriza begeht damit Selbstmord. Sie tut dies in einem kollektiven Wahn zur Selbstzerstörung, der groĂe Teile des Kontinents Europa bereits erfasst hat.
Im Mai beschloss in Griechenland die damalige âKoalition der Radikalen Linkenâ Syriza, die sich aus einer Vielzahl von linken Parteien und Gruppierungen zusammensetzte, die GrĂŒndung einer gemeinsamen Wahlliste um nicht als WahlbĂŒndnis, sondern als Partei antreten zu können. Am 16. Mai betonte gegenĂŒber Radio Utopie ein hochrangiger Syriza-Sprecher, es handele sich dabei um einen âtechnischen Schrittâ vor den Parlamentswahlen um das unfaire Wahlrecht zu umgehen, dass der stĂ€rksten Partei noch einmal 50 Abgeordnete obendrauf schenkt (diese Regelung gilt nicht fĂŒr WahlbĂŒndnisse).
Wie sich herausstellte, war dies alles andere als ein âtechnischer Schrittâ.

Democrats that represent people, not corporations
Itâs time to face the facts: the Democratic Party is broken, and the corporate wing of the party is responsible. By aligning with Wall Street over working men and women, it has allowed Republicans to take over most state legislatures, most governorships, Congress, and the presidency.
The solution is not unity with the corporate-backed Democrats. The solution is to challenge them and replace every single one of them with people who will fight for voters, not donors. Itâs time to rebuild the Democratic Party from scratch to be a party that fights for a clear progressive vision.

Völlig zurecht schrieb Markus Reuter daher auf netzpolitik.org, dass die Wahl Steinmeiers aus grund- und menschenrechtlicher Sicht eine Katastrophe wÀre. Die Katastrophe ist jetzt eingetreten.

That was largely because everyone in the UK was too busy arguing over the Brexit mess to notice that Theresa May had finally achieved her goal, and pushed through what the Open Rights Group called „the most extreme surveillance law ever passed in a democracy.“ Now that May has provided the police with the ability to rummage through a year‘s worth of every Brit‘s browsing history without a warrant, and given permission for the intelligence agencies to break into any computer and demand backdoors to be installed for any software or online service used in the UK, it seems she has a new target: whistleblowers. The Guardian reports on big changes the authorities want to make to the laws protecting government secrets, doubtless with an eye to dissuading any future Snowden/Guardian-type partnerships in the UK:
Prominent journalist Hasan Cemal sentenced to jail for âterror propagandaâ
âI have been doing journalism for 47 years. For the first time, I am being accused like this for the articles and books that I have written,â Cemal said during his hearing. âI have never defended terror. I have never become a tool for terror propaganda. I have always defended peace. Journalism is not a crime. There is no law, freedom and democracy in a society where journalism is a crime.â
Cemal is separately on trial for terror-related charges allegedly committed while he was serving as a one-day editor-in-chief of daily ĂzgĂŒr GĂŒndem as part of a solidarity campaign with the now-closed paper.
