Congress asleep at the wheel on US operations in Libya

Americans woke up on Monday, Aug. 1, to news that the U.S. military had expanded operations against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to a fourth front — this time in Libya, a nation that continues to be riven by multiple governments claiming legitimacy, wide-open borders, a struggling economy and a country hosting an alphabet soup of jihadist groups… Instead, the country was afforded a quick 159-word press statement from the Pentagon announcing that the United States is now opening up yet another front in the never-ending war on terrorism.

Another front in the war on Islamic State, and still no legal authority

That’s because the administration has a fallback legal position. It maintains, unconvincingly, that the war is legal under two previous authorizations of force: one approved in 2001 in response to the Sept. 11 attacks and another in 2002 aimed at “the continuing threat posed by Iraq” — the Iraq ruled by Saddam Hussein, that is.

Afghanistan: The campaign‘s forgotten war

Although hardly news, it bears repeating that the Afghanistan War stands as the longest in all of United States history. By election day, it will have entered its 16th year. Our next president will surely inherit the war there, just as Barack Obama inherited it from George W. Bush. Here is a situation where the phrase “endless war” is not hyperbole; it accurately describes reality.

America‘s war for the Greater Middle East

The 1991 war might have been a profitable war – Colin Powell later claimed America made money out of it – but it only paved the way for the 2003 war, which in turn paved the way for yet another more recent intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

And so on and so forth.

New foreign secretary Boris Johnson says Britain can have greater Europe role post-Brexit

(14.6.2016) „There‘s a massive difference between leaving the EU and our relations with Europe, which if anything I think are going to be intensified,“ Johnson, who was appointed to his post on Wednesday, told reporters.

„I was very pleased to receive a phone call from Secretary (John) Kerry of the United States who totally agreed with that analysis. His view was that post-Brexit and after the negotiations, what he really wants to see … is more Britain abroad, a greater global profile.“

Obama to talk Islamic State fight at Pentagon as U.S. expands Libya role

Obama typically convenes meetings of the National Security Council at the White House, but over the past year he has occasionally held them at other agencies like the State Department and the CIA. The goal of the road show at the Pentagon is to illustrate the multifaceted U.S. approach to defeating IS.

Bombs away: No good will come of U.S. attacks on Libya

The second major problem with the new initiative in Libya by President Barack Obama is that it does not deal with Libya’s current fundamental problem — the fact that it has three contending governments, as well as many more independent armed contending militias. There is one government in Tobruk in the east, another in Tripoli, the former capital, and a third, backed by the United Nations, holed up also in Tripoli.

Indications are that the most recent offensive by the Nusra Front-led rebels in northern Syria, aiming to relieve the siege of their half of Aleppo, has stalled, with a counter-offensive by the Syrian military launched overnight recovering considerable territory around the area, including two villages and a pair of key hilltops.

Top German Aviation Lawyer Has Rock Solid Case Against Ukraine Over MH17 (Video)

Under Article 9 of the Chicago Convention of 1949, to which Ukraine is a signatory, it is the responsibility of governments, in the event of armed conflict within their territory, to close the airspace above the conflict zone.
Not only did Ukraine fail to do this, Ukrainian air traffic control – whether through negligence or intention – directed MH17 to fly over Donbass where it met its terrible end.

Clint Eastwood says ‘kiss-ass generation’ needs to ‘get over’ Trump’s racism and bigoted comments

He said of Trump: “Everybody—the press and everybody’s going, ‘Oh, well, that’s racist’, and they’re making a big hoodoo out of it. Just f**king get over it. It’s a sad time in history.”
The star continued: “[Trump is] onto something, because secretly everybody’s getting tired of political correctness, kissing up. That’s the kiss-ass generation we’re in right now. We’re really in a pussy generation.
“Everybody’s walking on eggshells. We see people accusing people of being racist and all kinds of stuff. When I grew up, those things weren’t called racist.”

Gülen’s parallel hierarchy exposed as probe into failed coup attempt deepens

As the probe deepens into U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen’s supporters, the suspected organizers of the July 15 failed coup attempt, more of the hierarchy inside the Gülenist group has come to light, as reports have revealed Gülenist leaders known as “imams” commanded their superiors in the military and state organization.

The “imam” of the General Staff was Muhammet Uslu, a former cleaning worker who built up an “irrepressible career” due to his Gülenist links, daily Hürriyet columnist Abdülkadir Selvi wrote on Aug. 3.

Bombing Libya Again, This Time Because of 9/11

Haftar, a CIA asset and proxy of Egyptian dictator General Abdel el-Sisi, lived in the U.S. for nearly twenty years, residing just outside Washington DC in Falls Church and Vienna, Virginia, in cozy proximity to his patron in Langley. He became a U.S. citizen, and is now a powerful warlord back in his home country. It is another familiar story.

Police can disarm ‚suspects‘ without violence—when they choose to

Here’s a quick, mini refresher course. For all those who want to believe that the Black Lives Matter movement is a hate and/or terrorist group (it ain’t), understand this: The impetus was to show the disparate treatment that is afforded to certain individuals (like George Zimmerman, who acted as self-proclaimed “security” of his apartment complex) and law enforcement when it comes to the killing of black people.

Uncovering the Chicago Police Cover-Up

The lawyers who petitioned the court for a special prosecutor charged that in the course of what they described as a massive cover-up, officers had “intimidated witnesses, manufactured witness statements, destroyed evidence, prepared false police reports and may have provided false grand jury testimony” as part of an effort to portray the shooting as a heroic act of self-defense by a police officer in danger.

I Thought NATO “Liberated” Libya in 2011?

I thought the “most successful” campaign in NATO’s history meant that terrorism could not gain a foothold in the country, considering the Western alliance spends the majority of its time (after antagonising Russia that is) talking about fighting terrorism? I thought NATO’s love-bombs only hit the baddies, and never killed or maimed any civilians?
Are the Libyan people not enjoying the fruits of another Western foreign policy success story? Are the Libyan people not enjoying the stability that always follows a Western war of aggression? I thought the Libyan “kinetic military action” was yet another triumphant imperial endeavour, just like Afghanistan, Iraq and the numerous other countries that were lucky to be the targets of Western ‘humanitarian’ forces?

Netanyahu Blasts Israel‘s Left: ‚Fascism Is Its Derogatory Name for Its Enemies‘

Netanyahu also referred to the security situation, saying that in the Middle East „the weak doesn’t survive and the strong can both survive and create alliances.“ He also said that radical Islam „threatens free societies in the 21st centuries. The Shi‘ite stream headed by Iran, and the Sunni one by Islamic State, want to place their flags atop of the ruins of the free world… My policy is well-founded, I inherited it from my father who inherited it from Jabotinsky – treatment by power.“

Report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force for the period from 4 September to 19 November 2014

(1.12.2014) 5. In view of the heavy fighting, which was approaching close to the UNDOF headquarters at Camp Faouar and the mission’s positions in the central part of the area of separation, the Force Commander briefed both parties early in September on the Force’s plans to relocate its personnel and assets should the Nusra Front or other extremist fighters who posed a clear threat to the mission endanger the safety and security of the United Nations personnel. It should be noted here that from information posted on social media as well as in the course of its efforts to secure the release of the peacekeepers, the United Nations learned that its personnel had been taken and held by members of the Nusra Front. There were indications that the Nusra Front intended to detain additional UNDOF personnel and take from UNDOF more weapons and vehicles as opportunities arose. (…)

12. Crossing of the ceasefire line by civilians, primarily shepherds, was observed on an almost daily basis. On 24 October, United Nations observation post 73 observed 12 IDF soldiers who detained one civilian between the Alpha line and the Israeli technical fence south-east of the observation post and subsequently took him away. IDF informed UNDOF that they released the person within one hour at the same location. On 27 October, position 80 observed two IDF soldiers east of the technical fence returning from the direction of the Alpha line towards the technical fence. UNDOF observed IDF opening the technical fence gate and letting two individuals pass from the Bravo to the Alpha side. Following the evacuation of UNDOF personnel from position 85 on 28 August, UNDOF sporadically observed armed members of the opposition interacting with IDF across the ceasefire line in the vicinity of United Nations position 85.

Kern will Abbruch der EU-Beitrittsverhandlungen diskutieren
