Laut der Nachrichtenagentur DHA wurde auch ein Berater von Staatspräsident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Oberst Ali Yazici, festgenommen. Auch der Kommandeur der auch von der Bundeswehr genutzten türkischen Luftwaffenbasis Incirlik, General Bekir Ercan Van, soll nach Angaben aus Regierungskreisen festgenommen sein.

“All airline carriers, regardless of country of registry, are prohibited from flying into the United States from Turkey either directly or via third country,” noted the U.S. Embassy in Ankara in security warning on July 16.

Was there an intelligence failure? Very likely. Deputy Foreign Minister Numan Kurtulmuş said on CNN Türk on July 17 that they had heard nothing about such an organization in advance and, had they known, they could have taken precautions. That also puts both the police force under the Interior Ministry and the MİT face-to-face with hard questions, as well as the military’s own counter-intelligence.

The European Union and the United States expressed alarm Monday with Turkey‘s response to a failed coup, telling the NATO member and EU aspirant that it must uphold democracy and human rights as it pursues the military officers and anyone else involved in the plot.

„This is no excuse to take the country away from fundamental rights and the rule of law, and we will be extremely vigilant on that,“ EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said at a joint news conference with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

Turkey has strongly criticized Egypt for blocking an initiative at the U.N. Security Council to condemn the coup attempt and express solidarity with the democratically-elected Turkish government.

“It’s only natural for those who came to power through a coup to hesitate to take a position towards the coup attempt staged against our president and our government,” Tanju Bilgiç, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, said in a statement upon a question July 18.

“We were notified of an attack… The Meclis [parliament] is being evacuated,” Ziya Pir of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party wrote on Twitter.

However, it emerged that warnings of an imminent attack were, in fact, false. Police are currently investigating the incident, the state Anadolu Agency reports.

The takeover attempt launched Friday night by elements within the military was quashed the following day.

It has been revealed that Akin Ozturk, who was a member of Turkey’s Supreme Military Council, served in the Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv in the 1990s.

Turkish officials arrested the commander of the Incirlik Air Base, which the U.S. uses to carry out airstrikes against Islamic State in Syria, for complicity in Friday’s coup attempt, U.S. and Turkish officials said Sunday.

Indeed, it is possible for this coup attempt to have caused a change in Erdoğan’s mentality.

It was the people who poured onto the streets who suppressed the coup.

Aside from trying to intercept Erdogan’s plane, F-16s controlled by the plotters also flew low over both Istanbul and Ankara, the capital, and dropped at least one bomb on Parliament. According to some reports, they also bombed Erdogan’s vacation home shortly after he left it. They were apparently assisted by two KC-135 midair refuelers, which were spotted on radar hovering over central Turkey on Friday night.

The United States has a significant operation underway at Incirlik, including A-10 attack planes, KC-135 refueling tankers and surveillance aircraft, including armed drones.

In der Luftwaffenbasis Incirlik wurden mehrere an der Revolte beteiligten Offiziere verhaftet.

As the purge of the military continued on Sunday, one of those arrested was Gen. Bekir Ercan Van, the chief of Incirlik Air Base, from which the United States military flies missions over Iraq and Syria against the Islamic State.
