Amsterdam was one of the few local authority areas to vote in favour of the treaty. Turnout in the Dutch capital was below 27% but the vote was 52.5% in favour and 46.3% against.
In Utrecht, Groningen, Haarlem, Leiden and Wageningen voters also backed the EU trade treaty with Ukraine. In The Hague and Rotterdam, voters were clearly against.

The final result was due late Wednesday evening, polling organization Ipsos said. If the turnout does stay above the 30 percent mark, it would be the worst possible outcome for the Dutch government.

Dutch voters largely rejected a cooperation accord between the EU and Ukraine Wednesday with some 61 percent against the deal, the Dutch news agency ANP projected, adding that enough people had taken part for the referendum to be valid.

Forecasts of how many people will actually bother to vote range from 25% to over 40%. Only Dutch nationals, not the hundreds of thousands of other EU citizens in the Netherlands have a say.

It would be a great deal better if Ukraine were to remain a buffer state between east and west.
