Thousands protest Israeli restrictions in Palestinian marathon

Among the Gazans prevented from traveling ahead of Friday’s marathon in the West Bank was reigning champion and Olympian Nader al-Masri. Al-Masri has been refused entry into the West Bank in the past. In 2015 he appealed to the Israeli High Court through Gisha, an Israeli NGO specializing in Palestinian freedom of movement.

Hubris! Belgian curator of Athens & Epidaurus Festival excludes Greek artists

One third of the artists presented would be Greek in 2017-2019. But none in 2016. Fabre justified his decision saying he “has not had the necessary time to prepare the Greek proposals.” Jan Fabre was appointed by the current government, which ousted the previous director, Giorgos Loukos, from the role of deciding the festival’s artistic content.

Workers at Public Hospitals occupy Health Ministry

Personnel working at Greek public hospitals symbolically “occupied” the Health Ministry in Athens on Friday morning and closed the entrance with chains. The Panhellenic Federation of Workers in Public Hospitals (POEDIN) said: “A year ago the Prime Minister promised 4,500 recruits and increased funding. Nothing was materialized, funding declined, while data shows that employees at Public Hospitals are 2,500 people less than last year.”

Syria Federalization Should Be Decided by National Vote if Needed

„The unilateral PYD’s [the Kurdish Democratic Union Party] declaration on federalization in the northern cities dictated by the exclusion of Kurds from the [intra-Syrian] talks was not very appropriate and not helping in finding a political solution. However, should the Syrian people and the Kurds to decide they want to decentralize, this matter must be taken to vote,“ Samir Aita said.

Syria Will Stay Balanced if Assad Stays in Charge – Kurdish Advocacy Group

„Russians, to their credit, have said they are open to the idea of federation. Kurds will become the beneficiaries of it. It would be good for Assad as well even if he is in denial,“ Xulam said.
The Kurds were willing to cooperate with Assad, provided he did not try and re-impose a centralized state on them, and they were happy to work with Russia against the same enemies, Xulam explained.

France‘s president has finally imploded

In France, under article 89 of the Constitution, a revision requires a vote of each house of Parliament, followed by a three-fifth vote of the Congress, which is a session of both houses together. After France‘s conservatives allied with left-wing rebels in the French Senate to vote down the measure, Hollande concluded he didn‘t have the votes and canceled his planned constitutional amendment, blaming partisanship.

To say that this is a political humiliation is an understatement.

France’s tax subsidy on ‘gifts’ to Israeli army

(28.3.2016) This is astounding. A senior French politician has revealed that the tax laws of France entitle a citizen to make a charitable, tax-deductible donation to the Israeli army. As the French politician Nathalie Goulet observes: “This represents a tax benefit by the French taxpayer for the benefit of a foreign army.”

Turkish President Comes To The US, Pretends That It Can Silence And Attack The Press Like It Does At Home

We‘ve written a whole bunch about the incredibly thin-skinned and litigious President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan took his show on the road to the US this week, and apparently that included pretending that he can treat press in the US as bad as he does at home. Erdogan spoke at the Brookings Institution yesterday, and there were protestors outside. That‘s not that surprising, but rather than doing what basically anyone else does in that situation and ignore the protestors, Erdogan‘s security clashed with the protestors and then took it up a notch going after reporters:

Forget The Tough Talk – Saudi Arabia Is Desperate For A Production Freeze

At a time when the Saudis are desperately trying to hang on to their dwindling market share, it is intriguing to consider exactly why Russia and the OPEC nations are even discussing an oil production freeze, and what they hope to achieve, knowing that any increase in price will bring back the U.S. shale oil drillers with a vengeance, increasing the supply glut.
