But that’s life and we all know it. But in the end of the day we all go through it and we manage it.

Cycles 21 and 22 both showed annual averages of geomagnetic activity that were large in comparison with most cycles in the record of aa indices (Figure 2). The dramatic variability from one cycle to the next in these sunspot and geomagnetic records shows the difficulty in making empirical predictions of both types of activity. The issue is further complicated by the lack of a successful quantitative, theoretical model of the Sun‘s magnetic cycle.

Martin Wikelski vom Max-Planck-Institut für Ornithologie in Radolfzell hat zusammen mit einem internationalen Wissenschaftlerteam erstmals mit Hilfe von Satellitendaten die Rundreise von Kuckucken aus ihren Brutgebieten in Dänemark und Südschweden in die Überwinterungsplätze in Zentralafrika und wieder zurück verfolgt. Die Routen der einzelnen Vögel weichen trotz der enormen Distanz kaum voneinander ab. Mithilfe von Computermodellen errechnete Flugstrecken, die ausschließlich auf einem angeborenen Orientierungssinn beruhen, verlaufen deutlich unterschiedlicher.
Kuckucke verlassen sich folglich nicht nur auf ein angeborenes Kompass-Uhr-Navigationsvermögen, sondern nutzen zusätzliche Orientierungshilfen.

Seit Beginn 2012, so wurde es Mitte letzten Jahres schließlich öffentlich gemacht, hatte die “Opposition” Syriens unter Schirmherrschaft der Bundesregierung, namentlich des Auswärtigen Amts, geheime Organisations- und Vorbereitungstreffen in Berlin abgehalten. Finanziert wurden die Treffen der “syrischen Opposition”, hieß es, “sogar” aus der “neutralen Schweiz”. Bei den 45 Personen aus der “Opposition” Syriens handelte es sich, so die in Siegesgewissheit schließlich an die deutsche Öffentlichkeit gegebenen Informationen, um Vertreter des “Syrischen Nationalrat” S.N.C., also der Vertretung der offiziellen Invasionsstreitkräfte, “aber auch andere Kräfte aus unterschiedlichen politischen, ethnischen und religiösen Lagern”, hieß es. Hieß es im “Focus”.
In der “Zeit” war zu lesen, dass auch Vertreter der “Freien Syrischen Armee” an dem “klandestinen Projekt” in Berlin teilnahmen, dass die Treffen in Räumlichkeiten der “Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik” stattfanden, organisiert wurden vom “United States Institute of Peace” und vom Berliner Außenministerium, sowie dem Washingtoner State Department unter U.S.-Außenministerin Hillary Clinton finanziert worden waren
Natürlich hatte der Bundesnachrichtendienst davon überhaupt keine Ahnung und war auch nicht informiert. Schließlich sind Gerhard, Brutus und Cassius ehrenwerte Leute.

An extraordinary atmosphere of sullen, baffled evil, as the year
opens. I don‘t know what to compare 2014 to — except for many other glum post-revolutionary situations, when the zealots succeeded in toppling the status quo, then failed to install a just and decent form of civil order. The world in 2014 is like a globalized Twitter Egypt.
What‘s become of yesterday‘s august, sturdy, pre-digital institutions? For instance: why does the United States even have a Congress, in 2014? Is it habit? The Congress doesn‘t do anything now. Everybody despises them. They despise themselves even more than the public does.
At a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 2, Senator Feinstein showed her hand when she said: “I will do everything I can to prevent this [NSA’s bulk] program from being canceled.” Declaring that 9/11 “can never be allowed to happen in the United States of America again,” Feinstein claimed that intelligence officials did not have enough information to prevent the terrorist attacks.
Mr. President, we trust you are aware that the lack-of-enough-intelligence argument is dead wrong. Feinstein’s next dubious premise – that bulk collection is needed to prevent another 9/11 – is unproven and highly unlikely (not to mention its implications for the privacy protections of the Fourth Amendment).
Given the closed circle surrounding you, we are allowing for the possibility that the smell from these rotting red herrings has not yet reached you – even though your own Review Group has found, for example, that NSA’s bulk collection has thwarted exactly zero terrorist plots.
The sadder reality, Mr. President, is that NSA itself had enough information to prevent 9/11, but chose to sit on it rather than share it with the FBI or CIA. We know; we were there. We were witness to the many bureaucratic indignities that made NSA at least as culpable for pre-9/11 failures as are other U.S. intelligence agencies. (…)
