What to know about Israel’s Dimona nuclear site

In 1957, France provided support and approval, supplying Israel with a heavy-water, pressurized reactor. Dimona entered operation around 1963, with a reported capacity of 26 megawatts.

At the heart of the facility’s significance is its role in handling nuclear fuel.

Dimona processes spent nuclear fuel, described as the first stage in producing the atomic bomb, with the fuel then transferred elsewhere to be stored or mounted on missiles.

By 1967, reports cited from the US State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research pointed to a reprocessing plant for uranium and production of weapons-usable plutonium, concluding that Israel possessed a nuclear bomb.

Urenco vervierfacht Urananreicherungsgrad

Als mögliche Kunden führt Urenco „fortgeschrittene Reaktortypen“ sowie Forschungsreaktoren an, aber auch die von Urenco geplanten eigenen U-Batterie-Atomreaktoren. Konkretes Interesse an dem deutlich höher angereicherten Uran hat in den USA vor wenigen Wochen ausgerechnet das US-Verteidigungsministerium geäußert, das kleine mobile Reaktoren für „rapid response scenarios“ bauen möchte.

Trump administration kills contract for plutonium-to-fuel plant

CB&I Areva MOX Services LLC, a consortium including France’s state-owned Orano, formerly called Areva, has been building the Mixed Oxide (MOX) project at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina since 2007.

But the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration told it in a letter dated Oct. 10 that the project was over. “This notice terminates the contract in its entirety, and is effective immediately,” said the letter, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.
