Echoing recent demands from human rights advocates and former detainees, two dozens members of the U.S. Senate Democratic Caucus on Friday pressed President Joe Biden to finally close the Guantánamo Bay offshore military prison, where 40 men are still being held despite global outrage over the facility and its long record of torture.
The Vietnamese government has locked down its borders with Cambodia and imposed a month-long entry ban for any foreign traveller — except accredited diplomats — as the country adopts measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
People from the Pacific will be included in the border closure, as will temporary workers or temporary visa holders such as students.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the ban on non-Australians on Thursday, to take effect at 9pm on Friday, allowing people who are already in the air to land.
He added that the UN and the British Bases have already been informed on the move, which Ioannou said is being taken for the protection of both communities.
