„I just don‘t think we‘re there yet,“ Colin Kahl, undersecretary for defense policy, said this week, „The Abrams tank is a very complicated piece of equipment,“ he argued. „It‘s expensive. It‘s hard to train on. It has a jet engine.“
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that given the cost to maintain the Abrams, it „just doesn‘t make sense to provide that to the Ukrainians at this moment,“ arguing that the British Challenger tanks and German Leopard tanks were better alternatives.

A victory for Vladimir Putin in Ukraine would be a disastrous strategic blow to US interests in the region. That outweighs any concern about providing tanks, which (unlike missile systems) are far harder to use against targets within Russian territory. And the M1 Abrams is a battle-tested tool with diverse uses — especially in urban warfare, a key Ukrainian theater.

Officials said Poland is the first U.S. ally in Europe to be receiving Abrams tanks.
Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak signed the $1.4 billion deal at a military base in Wesola, near Warsaw. The agreement foresees the delivery of 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks with related equipment and logistics starting this year.
