Camera on Mars Orbiter Shows Signs of Latest Mars Lander

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has identified new markings on the surface of the Red Planet that are believed to be related to Europe‘s Schiaparelli test lander, which arrived at Mars on Oct. 19.

The new image shows a bright spot that may be Schiaparelli‘s parachute, and a larger dark spot interpreted as resulting from the impact of the lander itself following a much longer free fall than planned, after thrusters switched off prematurely. I

ExoMars lander ‚crashed‘ onto Mars

„The data we have,“ Ferri said, „say the landing sequence worked up to the detachment of the parachute‘s back shield. At that point the ignition of the retro-rockets only worked for three seconds, then the online computer decided to turn them off“. This meant Schiaparelli was without retrorockets and „we suppose the lander simply crashed“.

WhatsApp Encryption Overview: Technical white paper

WhatsApp Messenger allows people to exchange messages (including chats, group chats, images, videos, voice messages and files) and make WhatsApp calls around the world . WhatsApp messages and calls between a sender and receiver that use WhatsApp client software released after March 31, 2016 are end-to-end encrypted .

The Signal protocol, designed by Open Whisper Systems, is the basis for WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption . This end-to-end encryption protocol is designed to prevent third parties and WhatsApp from having plaintext access to messages or calls. What’s more, even if encryption keys from a user’s device are ever physically compromised, they cannot be used to go back in time to decrypt previously transmitted messages.

This document gives an overview of the Signal protocol and its use in WhatsApp .

NLG and ACLU Submit FOIA and Open Records Requests to Investigate Unconstitutional Surveillance of Water Protectors at Standing Rock

Today, the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), in conjunction with the ACLU of North Dakota, sent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and North Dakota Open Records Act requests to multiple state and federal agencies in response to the surveillance and arrests of the Native-led Water Protectors attempting to stop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). In an affront to First Amendment rights, Water Protectors and allies have been continuously surveilled by low-flying planes, helicopters, and drones, and have had local cell phone communications jammed and possibly recorded.

Comparative Analysis of Surveillance Laws and Practices in Latin America

In December 1992, following a hastily-drawn sketch of a map given to him by a whistleblower, the Paraguayan lawyer Martin Almada drove to an obscure police station in the suburb of Lambaré, near Asunción. Behind the police offices, in a run-down office building, he discovered a cache of 700,000 documents, piled nearly to the ceiling. This was “the Terror Archive,” an almost complete record of the interrogations, torture, and surveillance conducted by the military dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner. The files reported details of “Operation Condor,” a clandestine program between the military dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay and Brazil between the 1970s and 1980s.1 The military governments of those nations agreed to cooperate in sending teams into other countries to track, monitor and kill their political opponents.2 The files listed more than 50,000 deaths and 400,000 political prisoners throughout Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela.3

The U.S. Government Wants to Read Travelers’ Tweets Before Letting Them In

U.S. Customs and Border Protection wants to start collecting “information associated with your online presence” from travelers from countries eligible for a visa waiver, including much of Europe and a handful of other countries. Earlier this summer, the agency proposed including a field on certain customs forms for “provider/platform” and “social media identifier,” making headlines in the international press. If approved by the Office of Management and Budget, the change could take effect as soon as December.
