Niemand wird Ihnen das erzählen, aber so ist es gewesen. Auf diese Weise wurde die Untersuchung über die Gründe für die Irakinvasion begraben. Und keiner von uns in diesem Saal kann 60 Jahre warten, um diese große Lüge aufzudecken, die es damals gab. Es wird zu spät sein, die Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen.

(12/2014) Vor einhundert Jahren, am ersten Heiligen Abend des Ersten Weltkrieges, folgten deutsche, englische und französische Soldaten in den Schützengräben, die an der Westfront in Belgien und Frankreich gekämpft hatten, nicht den Befehlen der Generäle sondern den natürlichen ihres Herzens. Diese Nacht schrieb Geschichte, die im englischen als „Christmas Truce“ bezeichnet und der bis heute in einen viel grösseren Ausmass in den U.S.A. und Grossbritannien als in Deutschland in den Kirchen gedacht wird, vor allem auch mit dem Lied „Christmas in the Trenches“.

(1/2014) In den 1960er Jahren entstand innerhalb der Armee der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika eine gewaltige Widerstandsbewegung der einfachen Soldaten, die den Verlauf des Vietnam-Krieges als stärkste und aktivste Partei massgeblich beeinflusst hatte – effektiver als die Demonstrationen der Bürger und Studentenbewegung. Fast die Hälfte der eingesetzten Truppen meuterte gegen den Krieg.

The US war on Iraq began in January 1991. This was when US-led forces attacked that country in what Washington claimed was a response to Baghdad’s incursion into Kuwait six months earlier. After wreaking havoc and destruction on Iraq’s cities and villages, killing tens of thousands of Iraqis in the process, the US withdrew its forces.

For most people in the West, the war was just a TV spectacle. The depressing lack of a movement able to seriously confront, let alone stop the massacre has to be acknowledged. The limited anti-war movement that did emerge failed to sustain itself. With a few exceptions, most of those active in it implicitly accepted the spectacle‘s definition of the war. Once the bombs stopped falling and CNN stopped broadcasting from Baghdad, the war was declared to be over. Troops returned home, and radicals moved on to the next campaign. But the war was far from over.
